Night Vale Nightmares #5: [Best of?]

“The Sun is actually cold! It’s cold and empty, and all is lost! Greetings from Night Vale,” chimes a voice that is instantly recognizable as James Urbaniak, the VENTURE BROS. alum playing the part of senior Night Vale radio personality Leonard Burton as he dives us right into a clip show consisting entirely of clips we’ve never heard before. And as a result, we get a fascinating glimpse of Night Vale’s ancient and mysterious history. I do remember writing in the last review that I expected another interesting format tweak, and “[Best of?]” definitely lives up to those expectations.

Etheria Film Night 2015 Announces Official Short Film Lineup

For female directors in the horror genre, misrepresentation, discrimination and gender-driven obstacles have long been both the bane of their efforts whilst also a motivation to go above and beyond expectations. Said motivation has born many efforts to curb those mindsets, but above else, it’s led to more independent female filmmakers than ever exploring the dark recesses of their artistic sensibilities, allowing endeavors such as the annual Etheria Film Night to exist. And now, the 2015 edition of the event, which will be held at June 13th, 2015, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California, has announced it’s official short selection, which will lead to the North American premiere of Ursula Dabrowsky’s INNER DEMON.

The Disappearance of Garret Weaver: My Stanley Film Festival Experience

After learning about the Stanley Film Festival last year, I knew that the festival was going to be a necessary destination in 2015. It had everything that this writer could have ever asked for in a horror festival: an interactive horror immersion game, a line-up of reportedly fantastic genre titles and a legendary location that’s supposedly one of the most haunted estates in America. So when I learned that I would be representing FANGORIA at the beloved festival, I knew that I would be in for a treat, although admittedly, I had no idea truly what I would be walking into.

Event Report: “TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE LIVE!” at the 2015 Stanley Film Festival

From everything I could gather out of last year’s Stanley Film Festival, one of the most fun and engaging events was none other than the live rendition of TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE, Glenn McQuaid and Larry Fessenden’s series of macabre radio plays. Ripe with excellent writing, strong performances and the live spectacle of foley work and musical accompaniment, TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE was the highlight of FANGORIA’s coverage last year at Stanley Film Festival. So with high expectations in mind, this writer made sure the live TALES was at the top of his agenda at the Stanley Film Festival, especially once I heard both Barbara Crampton and Leon Vitali would be among the performers.

“HARROW COUNTY #1” (Comic Book Review)

Nothing quite hits the horror fan in the heart like a good Southern ghost story, what with their weeping willows, cursed towns and cemeteries that stretch for miles into the setting sun. Throw in a wise old man mumbling about how much “you don’t want to go down that road,” and you’re all set. HARROW COUNTY #1 takes all that classic imagery, paints it in earth-worn colors of the farmland and sets it free to terrorize your overly religious aunt. While perhaps more of an homage to classic horror than a wholly original piece, it is the comics dedication to giving its readers the perfect subtle scares while staying true to the old school ‘haints’ of the South that really gives it a voice.
