Toronto-based film scholar Alexandra West, who recently launched (with The Black Museum‘s Andrea Subissati) academic podcast ‘The Faculty of Horror‘, will be in the Boston Area next weekend to present her lecture GHOSTS IN THE MACHINE: THE EVOLUTION OF FOUND FOOTAGE HORROR, courtesy of hosts Cinema Slumber Party.
From ghosts to cannibals to home invaders, “found footage” horror films have made an indelible imprint on modern cinema. Toronto genre film journalist, playwright, and radio host Alexandra West will be visiting the Boston area to conduct an acclaimed film lecture that takes fans on a journey from the dark woods of Burkittsville, Maryland where a centuries old witch is rumored to haunt, to the claustrophobic confines of a Barcelona apartment building that is ground zero for an apocalyptic plague. She’ll be discussing the history of the “shaky cam” conceit from its literary roots to status as an enduring mainstay in modern cinema. The lecture includes conversations about groundbreaking works Cannibal Holocaust, Paranormal Activity, [REC], The Last Exorcism, and The Blair Witch Project, as well as the influence of Asian horror films like The Ring.
The lecture will be followed by a screening of early reality horror pic THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, for separate admission.
