Gay of the Dead: Jeremiah Campbell, Part Two

In Part One of my interview with out exploitation screenwriter Jeremiah (VIRUS X) Campbell we talked about forging a career in Ohio, coming out twice, and how he’s warping his two daughters. In this second of two parts, we’ll get the scoop on working with low-budget producers Fred Olen Ray and David Sterling, how many boobs are needed in a horror flick, and writing a screenplay in just three days.

Gay of the Dead: Dante Tomaselli, Part Three

In Part Two of my interview with Dante Tomaselli, we chatted about being out, his music and films, and I compared him to an autistic genius (which he took well). In this final of three parts, we talk about his regular cast members (Danny Lopes and Christie Sanford), THE OCEAN (what happened?), more filmmaking, and just what is he doing when he’s not making a film?

Gay of the Dead: Dante Tomaselli, Part Two

In Part One of this interview with Dante Tomaselli, we talked about his background, complex relationships with his parents and building the perfect funhouse. In this second of three parts, we discuss his personal life, how his synesthesia affects his music and his filmmaking (Yes, he makes music!), and some of the filmmakers of which he is a fan.

Gay of the Dead: Dante Tomaselli, Part One

The terms “nonlinear” and “dream logic” are used in almost every interview and article about Dante Tomaselli’s work (and Gay of the Dead will be no exception). DESECRATION, HORROR, SATAN’S PLAYGROUND and the just released TORTURE CHAMBER – four films that ask (demand?) us to turn off that “Point A to Point B” part of our brains and just go for the ride. But there is an internal logic to all of these films – Point A is deep inside Tomaselli’s mind, and Point B is… probably TBD.

Gay of the Dead: Joe Zaso, Part Two

In Part One of this interview, we talked about scream king Joe Zaso’s early films, including one of his favorites (5 DEAD ON THE CRIMSON CANVAS) and one of his least (NIKOS, THE IMPALER). In this second of two parts, we talk about his various scream queen friends, cooking, and being naked as part of the job.

Gay of the Dead: Joe Zaso, Part One

Let’s be honest – 99% of the pants-tent-inducing content in horror films centers on hot chicks. So, straight guys and lesbians – you’re welcome. But for the 1% of content aimed at the 10% of the audience (aka The Gays), there is one name you can count on for those pants tents – horror himbo and Scream King, Joe Zaso. Actor, model, producer, and more recently cookbook writer/publisher (CAFÉ HIMBO), Joe is first and foremost a really nice guy. These days you can also see him assisting Hedda Lettuce at her Chelsea’s Bow Tie Cinemas screenings, or in print ads for Michael Kaye. Later this year, look for Joe in the 2015 calendar “Ripped Genes: The Mature Men Edition.” (I have a feeling he won’t be wearing many clothes in that one).

Gay of the Dead: Babette Bombshell, Part Two

In Part One of this interview, Plus-size Goddess of Gore Babette Bombshell and I talked about our close calls with Jeffrey Dahmer, working with Kevin Strange, and RuPaul. In this second of two parts, I get the lowdown on working with Herschell Gordon Lewis, Lloyd Kaufman, Richard Marr-Griffin, and Debbie Rochon. Oh, and possibly being a sex offender.

Gay of the Dead: Babette Bombshell, Part One

Part of the new “Gay of the Dead” business model is the “pay it forward” interview: I ask each interviewee to tell me who I should interview next. Michael Varrati (TALES OF POE) pointed me in the direction of the “Plus-size Goddess of Gore,” drag performer Babette Bombshell. A quick look at her credits reveals work with Herschell Gordon Lewis (THE UH-OH SHOW), Lloyd Kaufman (RETURN TO NUKE ‘EM HIGH), Richard Marr-Griffin (THE DISCO EXORCIST) and the notorious Kevin Strange (COCKHAMMER). Time to get the skinny on the 300-pound glamour-puss whose Facebook “Personal interests” are “perverts, deviants, delinquents, criminals and serial killers.”

Gay of the Dead – Michael Varrati, Part One

The very prolific gay auxiliary of the East Coast Indie Horror Factory is making good use of a (currently) West Coast screenwriter and actor named Michael Varrati. Screenwriting work with Bart Mastronardi (TALES OF POE), Alan Rowe Kelly (ditto), and Richard Marr-Griffin (IT CAME FROM THE VCR), plus acting roles in Troma flicks (RETURN TO NUKE ‘EM HIGH VOLUME 2) and Debbie Rochon’s directing debut (MODEL HUNGER) have kept this boy very busy. While keeping up a lively Facebook chat over the past weeks, I subjected him to my gay dog and gay pony show in the form of an email interview.
