    “TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D” (Movie Review)

The moment is loaded with potential. You’ve seen glimpses in its trailer. A saw—one that is presumably family—rattles against a chain-link fence. It gives way, and a barrier between Leatherface’s homestead rampages and the public has been knocked down. He’s out in the world—in, of all places, a town carnival. Could TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D aim to match the hysterical lunacy of the original?

Recap: “AMERICAN HORROR STORY 210, The Name Game”

It seems AMERICAN HORROR STORY can still surprise. Midst the
madness that is ASYLUM, there was the question of Monsignor Timothy Howard, and
if his cowering ways would remain intact throughout or if Joseph Fiennes would
really get his hands on something. The tenth episode, “The Name Game” saw him
take serious responsibility and do away with the show’s greatest character. It
was a somber affair, and maybe all a bit unceremonious.

“THE LAST EXORCISM PART II” Poster: The Second Coming of Contortion

In continuing the story of poor Nell and her demon offspring, things will get even bendier.

Taking a cue from its predecessor’s striking, artful one-sheet (left), THE LAST EXORCISM PART II has brought back the bend. This rendition, it’s fair to say, boasts far more cheese. Although, “the second coming” tag is (maybe?) interesting. Is it purely a play on the religious aspect and return of her demon aggressor, or does the child and the group’s plans for it factor heavily in this sequel. It seems they would have to, right?

  • Criterion teases “ERASERHEAD,” “DEVIL’S BACKBONE”

by: Samuel Zimmerman on: 2013-01-02 16:13:01

The Criterion Collection, in their mission to lend proper
treatment to significant cinema has always embraced genre landmarks and
oddities; having released an incredible ROSEMARY’S BABY Blu-ray and the
splendid WHEN HORROR CAME TO SHOCHIKU in recent months, alone. Their
clue-ridden, 2013 teaser image has gone out and it would seem even more
fantastic titles are on the way.

Their newsletter, which often houses drawings such as these,
meant to titillate and tease what’s on the upcoming slate, hit yesterday and
while some titles are mere educated guesses (can we be entirely sure the
gentleman with activity around his brain is SCANNERS, or that the building
itself references THE TENANT), others feel like no-brainers.

As you’ll see below, the third window down (second from the
right) houses a Devil with his, well, backbone highlighted. A Criterion slate
of Guillermo del Toro’s more intimate films (CRONOS is already available) is a
hell of a prospect, especially seeing as how his Spanish Civil War-era ghost
story remains unavailable on U.S. Blu-ray. Meanwhile, scaling the left side of the building is a man
with a Pink Pearl eraser-head. All signs point to the first(!) film of David
Lynch’s to be included in the collection; surely, momentous and hopefully
continuous (here’s hoping for FIRE WALK WITH ME).

Does anything else in the sketch get you jazzed? You can find
    much more at Criterion.
