    “AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN, Bitchcraft” (TV Review)

    Whatever batshittery the rest of COVEN entails (and the door is left wide open for such), that which is contained in its premiere episode “Bitchcraft”—along with an already stellar ensemble, plus the work of breakout director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon—makes for one of the best, and maybe most definitive, hours AMERICAN HORROR STORY has ever seen.

    Fango Flashback: “THE BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW” (1970)

    We are perhaps inherently sympathetic to witches on film. They are, after all, creatures and characters of folklore and horror with the most significant and legitimate real-life counterparts. Those counterparts, aside from putting their faith in something seemingly older and wiser than most all, have been the unjustified targets of horrifying religious and gender-based persecution throughout history—most notoriously in the 17th Century. This weighs on the viewer, informing even films and tales in which witches are practicing magick in the name of some larger darkness, most especially in the type of Tigon British Film Productions pictures dubbed “Folk Horror” where more often than not, those charged with stopping pagan deeds are real bastards. For example: the harrowing, cruel Matthew Hopkins in perhaps the best “Folk Horror” film, WITCHFINDER GENERAL, or even the intensely stuffy Sergeant Howie in Robin Hardy’s classic THE WICKER MAN.

    One Sheet, Theatrical Dates for Drafthouse Films’ re-release of ’79 oddity, “THE VISITOR”

    On the heels of the reveal Drafthouse Films will be doing remastered justice to Abel Ferrara’s New York revenge classic MS. 45, comes the announcement another of their highly anticipated repertory releases will hit select theaters this Halloween: Michael J. Pardise’s massively insane cosmic Christ film THE VISITOR, starring directors John Huston and Sam Peckinpah, Shelley Winters and Lance Henriksen.

    Hammer to adapt Witchy novella, “THE DAYLIGHT GATE”

    Excitingly, witches are back in a big way. Is the short-lived sub-genre of Folk Horror, as well? It would seem so. In just over a week, FANGORIA is sponsoring Beyond Fest’s British Invasion double feature of occult-minded THE BORDERLANDS and Ben Wheatley’s psychedelic pagan period piece A FIELD IN ENGLAND. Both, set in rural England, follow in the influential footsteps of the likes of WITCHFINDER GENERAL, BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW and CRY OF THE BANSHEE. Now, Hammer Films (who tread that ground with the likes of the great THE DEVIL RIDES OUT and THE WITCHES) has taken an interest in Jeanette Winterson’s 17th-century set THE DAYLIGHT GATE.

    Daniel Radcliffe talks his Igor in upcoming “FRANKENSTEIN”

    In a recent live Q&A with SiriusXM, HARRY POTTER and THE WOMAN IN BLACK star Daniel Radcliffe was asked about his upcoming turn in the Max Landis-scripted FRANKENSTEIN. A further reconstructing of the mythos, it’s been said this new FRANKENSTEIN would present the classic tale through the eyes of Igor, the famed hunchbacked servant who officially joined the Frankenstein lineage in 1939’s SON OF FRANKENSTEIN. Radcliffe confirms as such and offers a whole lot more on the picture, which he describes as a “romp.”

    “THE DEMON’S ROOK” (Screamfest Movie Review)

    THE DEMON’S ROOK is exactly the kind of psychotronic gem we search for in no-budget/backyard/DIY horror. Director James Sizemore—wearing a vast array of horns and hats on the film including writer, star, producer and special makeup FX—is positively charged with realizing his entirely warped vision (is that what’s missing from so many movies?) of demons, netherworlds, surf rock barn parties and a bearded savior at all, and despite no, costs. Which is to say, in the already niche world of genre film, THE DEMON’S ROOK will occupy a special place in the hearts of a select few.

    Trailer: Summer Camp Initiation Horror, “SOLO”

    Perhaps for Isaac Cravit and his first feature SOLO (the premiere title from Shock Till You Drop’s new distribution banner), it’s a happy coincidence that the East Coast remains in something of a perpetual Indian Summer at the moment. The idyllic, picturesque camp on display, and the not-so-idyllic ordeal its lead Gillian goes through there still feel in reach. Then again, is summer camp horror ever out of season for admirers?

    Q&A: Director Jacob Vaughan on Good Puppetry and “BAD MILO”

    In BAD MILO, director Jacob Vaughan implicitly understands that our highest enjoyment of this tale of the titular intestinal demon and the havoc he wreaks would come with strings—or rods—attached. That is to say, BAD MILO works on a level of madcap horror/comedy thanks to all of the arguments we’ve seen in support of old school practical FX. Milo the demon is there, and so are his puppeteers Frank Langley and Bob Mano, bringing him in and out of Ken Marino’s butt to alternately bite dicks and cuddle close. FANGORIA spoke with Vaughan about the process of bringing Bad, and Good, Milo to life.

    “GODZILLA” Concept Teaser is reminded of Hindu Scripture

    The immortal classic GOJIRA saw the King of the Monsters born out of the devastation of atomic attack on Japan. As we greatly anticipate the upcoming iteration from Gareth Edwards and seeming rebirth of the most iconic of movie monsters, the initial, fantastic concept teaser shown at SDCC in 2012 is reminiscent of those roots, recalling theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer’s words about witnessing the first detonation of a nuclear device in 1945.
