Q&A: Sebastián Silva and the Paranoid Atmosphere of “MAGIC MAGIC”

Sebastián Silva, aided by a truly remarkable performance from Juno Temple, turns MAGIC MAGIC (now available on DVD from Sony) into a movie where its paranoid atmosphere seeps out and permeates the audience watching it. It’s something undeniably strange, oddly funny in certain moments and head-to-toe unsettling at others. It can be both simultaneously, and most often exclusively the latter. A tale predicated on uncertainty, Alicia (Temple) has little physical sense of where she is and is subsequently losing a mental grasp, as well. FANGORIA spoke with Silva about creating this ever-nervous world, the nature of horror, urban myth and his fear of a misleading trailer.

Naturally, there’s a sequel being developed. Little is known, but the Warrens have multitudes of files to delve into, and rumors are now accruing the one being eyed for a follow-up is a 1978 case out of England.

Bong Joon-ho’s “SNOWPIERCER” threatened with edits for American release?

I have a great optimism for the general audience. We will rise to the occasion that a challenging, exciting film presents. Sometimes, producers and distributors do not share as such. In this case, Bong Joon-ho, the world class South Korean filmmaker behind THE HOST and MOTHER, and his highly anticipated sci-fi tale SNOWPIERCER are apparently being threatened with cuts.

UNEARTHED & UNTOLD has a story to tell and it’s exclusively for fans and admirers (like myself) of Mary Lambert’s 1989 Stephen King-adaptation PET SEMATARY. In line with other full length docs meant to illuminate production history, filmmaker insight and ultimate legacy of particular terror tales, a trailer for the as yet unfinished film gives a look at what to expect.

More Merle in Deleted “WALKING DEAD” Season Three scene

Michael Rooker is a fantastic, strange presence and was certainly a huge asset to the endlessly grim world of THE WALKING DEAD. Of course, Merle is now gone, and until Rooker pops back up in James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, here’s last looks for the elder, less agreeable of the Dixon boys. It’s a nice little scene in which Carol gives Merle the business, being protective over both Daryl and a relative state of civility.
