EXCL: Phantom City Creative’s “VAULT OF HORROR” Piece for Mondo’s E.C. Comics Tribute Show

“Their time was cut short,” R.L. Stine writes in the introduction to Jim Trombetta’s collection and history of Horror Comics and their persecution, THE HORROR! THE HORROR! The GOOSEBUMPS creator continues, “Their star went dark. But the eerie, ghoulish glow they gave off shines on.” Later as he pledges his own allegiance and spot under the influence of E.C. titles like TALES FROM THE CRYPT, THE VAULT OF HORROR and THE HAUNT OF FEAR, it’s clear Stine is but one example of the far-reach E.C., creators Al Feldstein and William Gaines and artists/writers like Johnny Craig, Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, Graham Ingels, Jack Kamen, Joe Orlando and Al Williamson exert into the present.

“THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER”: The Best Film About Meeting Your Girlfriend’s Family

Art changes. THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, while ostensibly the same film it was in 1960, has become something else entirely for this viewer. Consumed as a teenager by reverence of its icons—Vincent Price and Roger Corman—USHER was not so much affecting as it simply was “essential watching.” Playing on Turner Classic, it was something that had to be seen and in turn, there was the thought that that was enough. Beyond Fest closes with special Livestreamed screening of “TRICK ‘R TREAT”; EXCL Comments

The successor to the seasonal cinematic throne is clear, and has been since a groundswell of buzz and support screenings (one by FANGORIA at the no-longer-with-us Pioneer Theater in the East Village) and its eventual immensely inadequate DVD release in October of 2009 saw TRICK ‘R TREAT blow audiences away. Steadily amassing a cult of fans and given a 24-hour annual Halloween marathon on FEARNet, the adoration of Michael Dougherty’s fantastic anthology has culminated in its producers at Legendary giving it the blowout it deserves. TRICK ‘R TREAT will close the currently running Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on Monday, October 28 with a cast and crew panel and screening at the Egyptian Theater, with both the film and Q&A livestreamed over Facebook. Writer/director Michael Dougherty spoke with FANGORIA about the enduring picture and the upcoming event…

Does “PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES” Look to Expand the Mythology of the Series

Conceived as a Latino audience-oriented spin-off to the current reigning horror series, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES sees the black magick that’s tormented Katie and her family veer off to another. Interestingly, it looks to find room for typical found footage frights and the meat of the films’ mythology the fourth, intensely bland film was so desperately lacking.

Such is the reason we continue to tell these stories  of the fear of oncoming motherhood and unleashing something awful unto the world. The latest spin on “what the hell is growing inside me?” comes from Radio Silence, the collective of gentleman who brought the house down in the final installment of V/H/S, “10/31/98″. It’s entitled DEVIL’S DUE.
