FANGORIA Presents: “SIN REAPER” actress says her prayers

Any fright fan, no matter how casual, would be hard pressed in saying that slasher films are easy experiences for actresses. Stories of startling on-camera reveals and unexpected FX trickery to achieve the proper depiction of fear only add more to the weight already carried by these overtly physical, and sometimes thankless, roles.

VHS tribute documentary “ADJUST YOUR TRACKING” ready for screening

VHS. Three letters that defined an entire generation of horror fans from the ’80s until the new millennium. It redefined the way people consumed cinema in general as it allowed for movies to be watched via home media. To some, VHS tapes were the key to a vault of obscure horror flicks and ingeniously wicked cover art, all of which could be gotten conveniently at a local video store. To others, VHS tapes were a cheap, inferior medium that served best as a stepping stone to the age of DVD and Blu-ray. Not surprisingly, VHS has accumulated a cult of its own and is being given a second life amongst hardcore cinephiles, much of which is chronicled in the new documentary ADJUST YOUR TRACKING: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE VHS COLLECTOR.

Down and dirty with “THE DEPRAVED”

In the past few years, the urban exploration scene has grown exponentially, with thrill seekers looking for new ways to go off the grid in a world otherwise revealed by Google Earth and GPS-enabled cell phones. However, as with all mysterious locales, there comes the danger of the territory, and it’s that danger that inspired THE DEPRAVED (formerly known as URBAN EXPLORER), the brutal new horror film from director Andy Fetscher. The film, which comes out on DVD/Blu-ray from Uncork’d Entertainment June 4, follows a group of young urban explorers in Berlin who learn the terrifying truth about a local urban legend, which Fetscher claims is partially inspired by his own experiences.

It’s hip to be scared at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival

Horror filmmaking has been tied to the independent scene since the birth of the cinematic genre, as renegade filmmaking and subversive storytelling often beget imaginative and frightening results. Therefore, one should not be surprised by the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival embracing The Dark Side, a one-night-only event showcasing the macabre and malevolent by Brooklyn-based independent filmmakers, which will also feature an industry panel hosted by FANGORIA editor emeritus Tony Timpone. The Dark Side will begin at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, May 16 at the Tuohy Hall Auditorium (located in St. Joseph’s College, 245 Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn).

Fango Funhouse: Judah Friedlander talks “FEAST,” “FEVER” and Frights!

As any true fright fanatic can tell you, horror and comedy go together like monsters and sequels, often bleeding into one another in such iconic genre offerings such as the DEAD ALIVE, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and CREEPSHOW. Whether it’s oddly timed decapitation or the bickering undead, few can argue that the subversive nature of both genres compliment each other with relative ease. Therefore, I welcome you, dear reader, to FANGO FUNHOUSE, a look into the co-dependent world of horror-comedy through those who know it best.

FANGORIA Presents: Getting Possessed By “ENTITY,” Part One

There are few thoughts that inspire as much dread as the sins of our pasts—our figurative ghosts following us, reminding us of our fallacies and mortality through our own mistakes and trespasses. And if our sins could manifest themselves into something malevolent and unrelenting, we could be sure we’d be dead to rights. It’s for this reason that ENTITY, the new release under the FANGORIA Presents banner (go here for details; to find Fango’s Comcast collection on your VOD channel, search Movies > Movie Collections > Fangoria), transcends simplistic scariness and creates an overall atmosphere of visceral fear.

At the mountains of metal: Lovecraft goes bronze!

Although H.P. Lovecraft has been dead for over 75 years, the author’s influence has seeped into every aspect of horror culture, whether it be film, literature, theater or art. Now, thanks to sculptor Bryan Moore and filmmaker Jovanka Vuckovic, the author’s visage will remain as everlasting as his work in the form of a life-sized bronze bust, set to permanently reside outside the Providence Athenaeum Library in Rhode Island. However, there is one catch: they need your help to make it happen!

Psychopalooza: Spanish web series “BLOODY JUSTICE” mixes reality with brutality

If you were to ask a horror fanatic what is killing pop culture, chances are more than a few may speak the words, “reality shows.” Yet for fans of a genre that so embraces found footage and voyeurism, it’s a surprise that few have previously tried to capitalize on the trend (Maurice Deveraux’ 2001 $LA$HER$ being a rare example). I’m sure THE REAL WORLD: TWIN PEAKS or SURVIVOR: CAMP CRYSTAL LAKE would have more than a sizeable audience. However, Spanish filmmaker Pablo Morales de los Rios is offering you the next best thing: BLOODY JUSTICE!

FANGORIA Presents: “SIN REAPER,” Big Creeper

One of the most important aspects about the current releases under the FANGORIA Presents banner (see here for details; to find Fango’s Comcast collection on your VOD channel, search this way: Movies > Movie Collections > Fangoria) is the variety of all the films chosen. Whether it’s a bloody family outing in AXED, eeriness in Eastern Europe in ENTITY or pandemic pandemonium in GERM Z, FANGORIA Presents aims to give fright fans a different experience in terror with each selection. However, Fango has something special for gorehounds with Sebastian Bartolitius’s SIN REAPER, in which nightmares of a dark monastery and an enigmatic killer come to life for Samantha, a young woman with a mysterious past.
