  • Gosling’s “LOST RIVER” To Skip Theatrical Release

To those who have been following Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, LOST RIVER (f/k/a HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER), the story surrounding the films release is a horror unto itself. The violent, ethereal film, which contains underwater cities, demons and sexual predators, was bought for distribution by Warner Brothers before it’s controversial Cannes bow, where the film was given many negative notices. And while industry rumors have long said that WB is trying to find a new outlet for the creepy genre film’s release, the news was confirmed today by Collider and Variety, who state the film will bypass theaters for a home media release this April.

    “STONEHEARST ASYLUM” (Blu-ray Review)

As someone who has been with the horror genre so consistently over the course of his career, it’s a surprise that Brad Anderson is still one of the more underappreciated genre filmmakers working today. This is especially so considering his versatility among his projects, handing in a kinetic, mainstream thriller like THE CALL while also offering brooding suspense in SESSION 9 and off-kilter tension in STONEHEARST ASYLUM. And with STONEHEARST, Anderson takes on a bigger challenge than he’s yet to do: adapt the period-appropriate work of Edgar Allen Poe while maintaining a unique cinematic voice of his own.

    “POKER NIGHT” (Film Review)

There’s a certain beauty in independent films that the VOD/STV market has instilled in the viewing experience that otherwise is only found around film festivals, and that’s the absence of expectation. Looking at the promotional material for POKER NIGHT, the film could be confused for a masked slasher film or a late stage addition into the torture porn subgenre. And yet with little in the way of hype or criticism before the screening, I couldn’t really nail down what the film would be and, more importantly, where it would go.

  • Festival Favorites “IT FOLLOWS”, “SUBURBAN GOTHIC” Get New Trailers

Ah, 2015. It’s practically in the air as horror fans wait through this barren holiday season, hoping that their favorite horrors of 2015 will be under the tree (or whatever holiday shrine applicable). But while we wait for January and, of course, the ample scare selections throughout the winter, it’s also time for the cinematic chillers of 2015 build some horrifying hype, and few have done more so than a pair of festival favorites that have debuted their U.S. trailers this week: David Robert Mitchell’s IT FOLLOWS and Richard Bates Jr.’s SUBURBAN GOTHIC

Scream Factory Doubles Down on “SLEEPAWAY CAMP” Sequels

As a horror fan, I often feel like there’s a rather harsh divide between the fans of SLEEPAWAY CAMP and its sequels. After the release of RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP, the only sequel canonical to the original film, it seems that fans of the campy Pamela Springsteen-starring SLEEPAWAY CAMP II: UNHAPPY CAMPERS and SLEEPAWAY CAMP III: UNHAPPY CAMPERS have been at odds with the much darker and nastier Robert Hiltzik-directed entries. Nevertheless, to the horror community worldwide, the Blu-ray release of SLEEPAWAY CAMP by Scream Factory left fans wondering if the company would follow suit with the sequels, and now they’ve got their answer as Scream Factory announced on their Facebook page they’re releasing both films on Blu-ray in 2015!

    First “CRIMSON PEAK” Image Surfaces

Out of all the films releasing in 2014, there’s few that are as anticipated among the horror crowd as CRIMSON PEAK, the welcome return to Gothic horror from Guillermo del Toro. Yet while there’s been little in the way of previews for CRIMSON PEAK, excluding a teaser that played exclusively at San Diego Comic Con, fans at large are finally getting a chance to see what lays inside the titular haunted estate as The Film Stage debuted the first image of Jessica Chastain from the film.

Adult Swim Creeps Again With New ‘Infomercial’, “UNEDITED FOOTAGE OF A BEAR”

Last month, FANGORIA reported on Adult Swim’s first shocking “Infomercial” short, which now apparently functiona as an 11-minute block at 4 a.m. where different comedic artists can express whatever weird, absurd or sinister impulses their hearts desired. And while TOO MANY COOKS was a viral sensation that bled genuine horror love with a sense of bizarre humor, their latest addition takes the horror ball and runs with it, making the comedy an understatement built in the conceit more so than the execution.
