    “LET US PREY” (Film Review)

    The mid-’00s were a very strange time in horror; the J-horror remake movement had gone stale, while the so-called “torture porn” scene exploded side by side with the New French Extremity movement. There was a very specific theme of sadism that ran through the genre on almost every level, with horror focusing on anguish and suffering whether or not the story truly supported it. Thus, many films of this time remain far from memorable, as even though the intention to push the barriers of good taste was pursued, there was so little payoff to make the experience truly gratifying. And when watching Brian O’Malley’s LET US PREY, that era came to mind in a different light altogether: creepy, brutal and gripping, I felt as if I was watching what those films had so often sought to become yet with the substance they so often forgotten.

    Stanley Film Festival ’15: Larry Fessenden on Neo-Fulci Fright Flick “WE ARE STILL HERE”

    For fans of independent horror, the name “Larry Fessenden” should be very familiar. The creator of the NY-based production house Glass Eye Pix, which turns 30 later this year, Fessenden has proven himself as performer, producer and director in the independent horror world, shepherding talents like Ti West, Jim Mickle and Glenn McQuaid while helming fright fare such as WENDIGO, THE LAST WINTER and 2013’s killer fish movie BENEATH. However, Fessenden has been just as busy on-camera as he has been off, appearing in recent projects such as YOU’RE NEXT, HELLBENDERS, LATE PHASES, JUG FACE, I SELL THE DEAD, THE STRAIN and, most recently, Ted Geoghegan’s WE ARE STILL HERE.

    Recently, the neo-Fulci chiller played at the incredible Stanley Film Festival, where Fessenden also represented his own TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE LIVE as well as his appearance in Dan Berk and Robert Olsen’s BODY.     While survival horror has long dominated the video game landscape, not many horror games have been able to capture the essence of genre cinema, instead wielding in splattery combat or repetitive puzzle challenges.     FANGO Flashback: “TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE, SEASON 1″

    For all of the people in the world who follow each little step the technological world takes, especially in the way of consuming media, it’s no surprise that others clamor for a taste of the old and antiquated.     Stream to Scream: “HELLRAISER V: INFERNO”

    For a franchise nine films deep, it’s surprising that there are so few universally beloved HELLRAISER films. Aside from the undeniably frightening original and, arguably, the nightmarish fever dream of HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, each HELLRAISER film has a critically polarizing stance among fright fans, especially once the series’ transparent status of “existing scripts refashioned for HELLRAISER” comes into play. However, the first sequel to undergo said process is also one of the strongest of the HELLRAISER sequels, trading in a big-screen budget for a genuinely creepy and stylish affair that introduced the world to SINISTER/EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE director Scott Derrickson.
