  • Found Footage… For Real: Vincent Price in Tim Burton & Rick Heinrichs’ “VINCENT”

    ,,

As many horror icons as there may be in the lexicon of the genre- and there are many– I don’t think there is any as instantly recognizable and quite as beloved as Vincent Price. A brilliant performer in his own right, Price’s adoration of the horror genre went far beyond the projects he appeared in; in fact, to many, Price was as synonymous with the horror genre as ghosts and ghouls themselves. But while Price’s wit and class might never be replicated in the horror genre, there’s no doubt his influences spread far and wide, especially for his EDWARD SCISSORHANDS’ cohort Tim Burton.

  • Event Report: Texas Frightmare Weekend 2016

    ,

Despite having worked with the event itself for months leading up to April 29th, I was in no way, shape or form quite prepared for Texas Frightmare Weekend 2016. I’ve been to conventions before, and huge ones at that- Walker Stalker Convention 2015, Weekend of Horrors, Chiller, and four years of New York Comic Con among them- but even those shows didn’t quite have as much passion and horror know-how in the air as the Dallas/Fort Worth-based event. And as exciting as it was to be a relatively small part of putting it all together, it was even more exciting to experience it up close and personal.

  • Become A Ghostbuster At Sony & BBQ Films’ Exclusive, Immersive “GHOSTBUSTERS” Event!

    ,

One of my earliest introductions to the horror genre, in its many ways, shapes and forms, was undoubtedly through GHOSTBUSTERS. Whether it was the film itself, or perhaps the live stage show at Universal Studios Orlando, this writer remembers the universal appeal of GHOSTBUSTERS; hell, I’d argue most fright fans would jump through hoops for the chance to be a Ghostbuster themselves. And now, thirty two years after the film was released, partygoers and horrorheads will finally have their chance, as BBQ Films, the live theatrical event team behind the BEETLEJUICE Wedding and BLADE Rave experiences, is teaming with Sony Pictures to create a GHOSTBUSTERS event unlike any other!

  • Genre-Centric Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival Open For Submissions!

    ,

While the East Coast is quite an interesting hub for the genre world, there’s sadly not quite a definitive genre festival for the Northeastern U.S.  Although there are many admirable efforts, from Ithaca Fantastic to Boston Underground to NYCHFF, there’s no East Coast equivalent to the likes of Fantasia, Stanley, Fantastic Fest or TIFF. Yet this fall, another festival looks to potentially take that title as the genre-centric Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival has announced its residency in Center City Philadelphia.

  • “PENNY DREADFUL: Season 3, Episode 1” (TV Review)

    ,,

In the history of PENNY DREADFUL, the series has often drawn praise from viewers and critics alike for embracing Gothic Horror storytelling. The show’s narrative often required as much patience as it did violence, and organically fleshed out its character relationships in a way that would drive these literary horror icons together. Yet for the third season of the series, the show’s approach takes a certain and noticeable stylistic shift that somewhat disregards its Gothic beginnings for a full-on golden age cinema revival, complete with a train robbery, more action-driven set pieces and less rumination on life-and-death.
