Q&A: Writer Allan Scott talks “DON’T LOOK NOW”

On Monday, May 11th the fine folks at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto have booked award-winning screenwriter and producer Allan Scott as their special guest at their ongoing “Books on Film” series. As most more informed FANGO readers might know, Scott wrote the adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s chilling story DON’T LOOK NOW, for what would become the legendary same-named Nicholas Roeg directed horror classic starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie; Scott would go on to work with Roeg several times, helping sculpt a dynamic, dark and strange body of work. DON’T LOOK NOW (which has been recently set for a remake) is always worthy of discussion and praise, and FANGO was honored to have some time with Scott in anticipation of his TIFF appearance.

Book Review: “SEX AND HORROR: THE ART OF EMANUELE TAGLIETTI” (NSFW)

Artist Emanuele Taglietti is one of the most celebrated masters to emerge from that unique period in 1970’s Italy, when morale shifted and the popular fumetti (Italian comic books, literally translated as “puffs of smoke”, an allusion to speech bubbles) followed more liberal strains of genre cinema and more overt, explicit sexuality was visualized on their covers. Tagleitti, a former set designer who had worked with Fellini, jumped on this, exploiting the comforts of working from home by becoming a full-fledged cover illustrator, nurturing a style that was sensual, lurid, saturated and bristling with energy.

Q&A: “BITTEN” Star Laura Vandervoort talks Sex and Werewolves

If judged solely by its glossy promotional campaign, the hit SyFy series BITTEN (based on the best-selling WOMEN OF THE OTHERWORLD novels by Kelley Armstrong) might look like post-TWILIGHT pablum aimed squarely at a young, swoony female demographic. And perhaps, on a certain level it is. But a deeper analysis– i.e, actually, y’know, watching the show– reveals a much more layered mythology with a dark heart to offset its soap opera steeped narrative thrust.

“THE ROOMMATES” / “A WOMAN FOR ALL MEN” (Blu-ray Review)

Producer/director and eventual distributor Arthur Marks is widely recognized as one of the true innovators of the American exploitation film, having helmed such lurid, brash 70’s classics as DETROIT 9000, J.D’s REVENGE, THE CENTERFOLD GIRLS and MONKEY HU$TLE but his roots lay in network television. Years before Marks made his, er, mark at the drive-in, he was one of the major creative forces behind iconic early TV drama PERRY MASON and it’s that small screen sensibility that is vital to both appreciating and understanding the pair of fantastic and virtually forgotten cult gems found on the revived Gorgon Video’s Marks-centric Blu-ray: 1972’s THE ROOMMATES and 1974’s A WOMAN FOR ALL MEN, both films making their home video premieres here.
