    Okay, as someone fell who in love with Event Horizon years ago, I’ve developed a bit of an obsession with stories that seem to effortlessly fuse sci-fi and horror.  Sure, sometimes compelling, horror infused sci-fi can be hard to find, but when you do come across it there’s nothing quite like it. This tends to be particularly true for novels in the genre. As for me, I read them because sometimes reading about the horror of the fictional unknown, makes it easier to cope with the real unknown. Why, you may ask? Because facing fear and overcoming it teaches us a little bit about who are, even in print. So, without further ado, meandering, or woolgathering, here are my top four picks in no particular order.

  • Alien Bursts Forth In VR

    As the countdown to Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated Alien: Covenant continues, Twentieth Century Fox and partners unveiled a truly terrifying addition to the Alien canon – Alien: Covenant In Utero, A Virtual Reality Experience.   The invitation-only event, held at Technicolor’s Experience Center in Culver City featured forward thinking creatives from Fox, Ridley Scott Associates, Technicolor’s MPC VR unit and others as well as multiple VR demo stations.  The 360° experience puts the viewer inside the gestation pod as the Alien Neomorph finishes developing and explodes out towards its first victim.  “We’ve always been on the receiving end (of the Alien),” says Alien: Covenant In Utero director, David Karlak, “now we get to be that creature.”  Karlak, whose acclaimed short film Rise brought him to Scott’s attention says the legendary filmmaker was heavily involved in the project from script to VR screen.  “Ridley is the original futurist,” Karlak continues, “he sees VR as an instrument of the future.”

    Besides the numerous genre movies playing in the just-opened 16th annual Tribeca Film Festival (see previous item HERE), a bunch of promising TV shows, shorts and VR experiences will be unfolding. Fango just got its claws on some exclusive pics from THE MIDNIGHT SERVICE, a true-crime series about urban legends, notorious criminals, occult pop culture and first-hand accounts of the unknown. Screening as part of the Tribeca N.O.W. showcase, THE MIDNIGHT SERVICE is a short-form program which uses a documentary style to explore the mysterious in the visual language of authenticity. Each episode bounces between real-life anomalies, notorious criminals, the occult in our midst and first-hand accounts of the macabre.

    In 2016, Fringe Immersive, The Haunted Scarehouse and infamous shock haunter Russ McKamey put on a controversial survival based horror experience. DYSTOPIA was banned from opening in New York in 2015 and the prospect of it happening looked grim. The Haunted Scarehouse of Wharton, New Jersey offered up their location. DYSTOPIA opened to great reviews and guests traveling from all over America and even as far as Australia to try out the beta version of the experience.

    In 2016, The Haunted Scarehouse of Wharton, NJ and Fringe Immersive out of New York teamed up with shock haunter Russ McKamey of the infamous McKamey Manor to bring the east coast a taste of extreme horror with DYSTOPIA. The horror show went very well with guests traveling from as far as Australia to attend the one night only experience.

    Flash forward to 2017 and the people who brought you DYSTOPIA have created a new experience called DEPROGRAMMED which targets the topics of safe spaces and regressive left-wing politics.
