NEVER SLEEP AGAIN: THE ELM STREET LEGACY, Thommy Hutson’s exhaustive account of the making of Wes Craven’s A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, is even more comprehensive in the new paperback edition. Hutson talks this expanded edition past the jump.
Published by Permuted Platinum, NEVER SLEEP AGAIN updates the limited-edition hardcover edition issued by Red Rover Books in 2014. “After creating the original coffee-table book,” the author tells Fango, “I knew I wanted a way for the story behind the film to reach a much wider audience. The paperback version does just that. And for those who already have the hardcover, this edition has a few more interviews, some new stories and information, and is a great way to have a reading copy.”
The 352-page book functions as a companion piece to the same-titled 2010 documentary written by Hutson and directed by Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch. “Realizing there was so much more to be told about the making of Wes Craven’s 1984 classic,” Hutson says, “I was thrilled to be able to interview so many cast and crew from NIGHTMARE and hear them share their stories and memories. In addition to the making of the original movie, I was excited to be able to explore a little more of Craven’s history leading up to the film, as well as Robert Shaye’s work and the start of New Line Cinema. Because both of their careers were so varied and interesting, not to mention fascinating, touching on both of their stories is a great primer before they came together on NIGHTMARE.
Shaye provided a new preface for this edition of NEVER SLEEP AGAIN, to go with a foreword by Craven and an afterword by star Heather Langenkamp. Overall, Hutson says, “I think it’s a really interesting, entertaining and insightful look behind the scenes, with over 50 interviews and literally hundreds of photos. I am so proud of this book and glad that so many talented people who either worked on the film, or with Wes and Bob before it, allowed me to help tell their NIGHTMARE story. I hope readers enjoy it as much as I loved crafting it!” NEVER SLEEP AGAIN is available at Amazon.com and other on-line retailers; for a preview, hit up the publisher’s webpage for the book.
