PRISONERS director Denis Villenueve is getting further out there with each follow-up. His latest, the surreal and uneasy doppelganger tale ENEMY is currently in theaters. With its monstrous visions, the film likely prepared him for STORY OF YOUR LIFE, his upcoming alien-centric thriller based on a short story by Ted Chiang, and which it looks like will likely star Amy Adams.

Deadline reports Adams (AMERICAN HUSTLE, pictured above in MAN OF STEEL) is in early talks for the film, scripted by Eric Heisserer (THE THING 2011, FINAL DESTINATION 5) and focuses on a linguist hired by the military to translate an alien language. “As she learns to communicate with the aliens,” the synopsis continues, “she begins experiencing vivid flashbacks that become the key to unlocking the greater mystery about the true purpose of their visit.”

Last month, FANGORIA spoke to Villenueve about the fantastic ENEMY and we briefly touched on STORY OF YOUR LIFE. “I fell in love with a very powerful project,” the filmmaker says. “The title is a temporary title, STORY OF YOUR LIFE. It’s the story of a linguist and she’s hired by the U.S.  Government to try to translate an extraterrestrial language…They are in contact and they need to translate so someone will understand them. It’s a very powerful story that is taking a very cliché idea—which is extraterrestrial—but it’s bringing a new way to look at it. I’m very excited about this project. I’ve been meaning to get into sci-fi for the past 40 years!”
