Charles P. Pierce’s frightening docudrama-esque chronicle of true life murders in Texarkansa is getting redone.
Announced today at an AMERICAN HORROR STORY press event (and subsequently through Shock Till You Drop), Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum will produce an Alfonso Gomez-Rejon directed remake of THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN. Based on the real-life exploits of the Phantom Killer in the Texas-Arkansas border town in 1946, the film has garnered a serious reputation for its stark, legitimately scary violence, and odd balance of tone.
Rejon has yet to make the jump to features (aside from Second Unit work on ARGO and others), but is arguably one of AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM’s breakouts, having helmed this season’s best episode, “I Am Anne Frank, Pt. 2″ (I’m sure that’s an amazing invite to those reading this completely out of context). Stylish, sometimes dizzying and sometimes irritatingly so, the director’s flair is a far cry from that of Pierce. His take will certainly be one worth keeping an eye on.
