AHS: The “FREAK SHOW” has Pepper Pre-“ASYLUM”

Following call sheet-based rumors earlier this summer, AMERICAN HORROR STORY creator Ryan Murphy has now confirmed the anthology series’ fourth run will make its first connection with another season: Naomi Grossman returning as ASYLUM favorite, Pepper.

If ASYLUM’s microcephalic character Pepper was a nod to Tod Browning’s classic FREAKS—there’s never a shortage of nods on AHS—then she’s right at home on the upcoming FREAK SHOW, which takes place 12 years prior to the events at Briarcliff. Of Pepper’s inclusion, Murphy tells EW, “We thought about it long and hard and we decided that it was interesting to do.”

FREAK SHOW focuses on a sideshow in 1952 Jupiter, Florida run by one Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange). Murphy explains, “What Elsa has done for 20 years is she goes around to hospitals and jails and rescues these ‘freak’ circus performers who are going to be shipped away to asylums and she signs the waivers and she becomes their guardians.”

Are you stoked on Pepper and AMERICAN HORROR STORY’s return? Are you saddened Lange won’t have her Boston accent with which to utter, “Peppuh”? The series is back October 8th and co-stars AHS vets Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts and more. Find the first image of Pepper in FREAK SHOW, below.
