The drive-in and late-night-TV perennial from 1973 is finally getting a sequel, and we’ve got words from one of the stars and producers about the plot and location, to go with the movie’s first trailer.

ID: DON’T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT 2 recently lensed under director Anthony Brownrigg (son of the original’s director S.F. Brownrigg) from a script he wrote with Megan Emerick, who also co-stars. The cast additionally includes Andrew Sensenig (one of the film’s executive producers), Frank Mosley, Arianne Martin, Scott Tepperman and Jim O’Rear, with makeup FX by Marcus Koch. The original took place in a mental institution where the inmates take over, and Sensenig, who also stars in UPSTREAM COLOR and the forthcoming WE ARE STILL HERE, tells Fango, “BASEMENT 2 has so many new and vibrant characters. The audience is going to have a hard time picking their favorites or who they want to hate the most [laughs]! The story starts off with a nice doctor from New York, played by me, moving to a new facility, along with Sam [Willie Minor Jr.] returning to the same asylum after being away for 40 years, and quickly erupts into mental and physical chaos. It’s a rollercoaster ride through some bloody curves, to say the least.”

DON’T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT 2 lensed in Tehuacana, Texas—in the very same building where its predecessor was filmed. “That was absolutely surreal,” Sensenig recalls. “We were shooting some bloody scenes in literally the exact same room and same spot as in the original. It was almost like the spirits were still roaming the house, and very creepy but very exciting at the same time.”

The trailer seen below premiered this past weekend at Texas Frightmare Weekend, and Sensenig reports, “The buzz for DON’T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT 2 was crazy. Just walking around wearing the T-shirt, I was stopped every few steps by people saying, ‘Hey, you’re that doctor in BASEMENT, right? That movie looks sick, dude! Can’t wait to see it.’ I was literally stopped by several hundred people.” Look for more on BASEMENT 2 at this site as it gets closer to release, and check out the official website and Facebook page.
