Already attached to helm the WORLD WAR Z sequel, the director of the popular ghost story THE ORPHANAGE and the international hit THE IMPOSSIBLE is set to take the reins of a major youth-oriented fantasy creature feature.
Focus Features has announced that it will co-finance and handle domestic distribution for A MONSTER CALLS, to be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona (pictured above) and produced by his regular collaborator Belen Atienza. Based on the award-winning novel by Patrick Ness, who will script the adaptation, A MONSTER CALLS centers on a young boy who escapes his troubles, including school bullies and an ill mother, by venturing into a world of monsters and other fantastical characters.
“It is an incredible privilege to bring Patrick Ness’ exceptional book to the screen,” Bayona says, “and I couldn’t have imagined better partners joining me in this endeavor. After THE ORPHANAGE and THE IMPOSSIBLE, A MONSTER CALLS is the perfect final chapter in a trilogy centered on the extraordinary strength of the mother-child bond.” Adds Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel, “Juan Antonio Bayona is a filmmaker whose storytelling skills and stunning visuals are truly distinctive. He captures emotional truths amidst fantastical and terrifying situations, making him the ideal director to bring this acclaimed novel to a wide audience.” Also backing the feature are River Road Entertainment, Participant Media and Lionsgate International; a fall 2016 release is planned.
