Toys of Terror #50: The “Best Of” Special!

,,

Welcome to TOYS OF TERROR, Fango’s weekly feature exhibiting the coolest horror accessories across the web. Whether you’re a collector, connoisseur or simply making your love of horror a family affair, these petrifying playthings are likely to impress even the most heartless horror fan. So if you’re searching for a ghoulish gift, look no further…

Holy hell! Toys of Terror celebrates the big 5-0 today, having provided weekly doses of creepy collectibles for almost a year straight, and that’s something worth celebrating over here at FANGO! So instead of going back to the grind this week, we’re using our fiftieth installment of Toys of Terror to reflect on six of the most frightening and fascinating figures in the column’s history. Unfortunately, some of these titles are out-of-stock from their original listings, but if you really want them, you can likely track ’em down at the search engine of your preference. So without further ado…

To begin Toys of Terror this week, we offer the priciest of the featured collectibles, originally listed at a staggering $499.99. But what terrifying toy could possibly be worth that much dough? How about the GHOSTBUSTERS Terror Dog replica from Chronicle Collectibles, cast from the original FX mold and approved by sculptor Randall William Cook? Hand painted and rotocast in resin, this restored replica from Kristina Lucas Francis measures at 24″ Long x 12″ Wide x 11″ High, and comes with interchangeable horn sets for whether you want it to be The Gatekeeper or Keymaster.

Next up is a very special collector’s item from one of this writer’s all-time favorite fright flicks: Nathan Grantham from CREEPSHOW! The titular terror of “Father’s Day,” this figure from Shrunken Heads Studio features a screen-accurate design, complete with 30 points of articulation, posable jaw, miniature ashtray and prop “cake”, featuring Aunt Sylvia’s head! This 12-inch figure comes in both a special edition (featuring glow-in-the-dark candles) and standard edition, both which were previously listed for $150.00.

Our third Toy of Terror is both a long anticipated collectible from a bonafide horror classic and a perfect Father’s Day present: the Jack Torrance action figure! Replicated at a 1/6 scale and hand-made by Brother Production, this figure from THE SHINING comes with two different head sculpts, 35 points of articulation and a slew of impressively recreated accessories, include a full warddrobe, an axe, typewriter, his manuscript, cigarettes and the Overlook Hotel’s signature bottle of wine. As this figure is extremely limited in quantity and custom built, the Jack Torrance figure was originally listed at a steep $299.99, but justifiably so as it’s the holy grail for fans of Kubrick’s terrifying masterpiece.

GREMLINS fans will be sure to appreciate this next frightening figure, as NECA is offering something truly special: the Spider Gremlin Deluxe Action Figure! 10 inches tall, 15 inches across and 12 inches long, this incredibly detailed recreation of the Spider Gremlin from GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH has over 30 points of articulation, making it a truly desirable figure for genre collectors. This awesome accessory was originally listed for $49.99.

This week, I begin Toys of Terror with a figure that’s most unattainable: SALEM’S LOT’s Kurt Barlow from Distinctive Dummies! Artist Steve Thompson brings this iconic creature to action figure notoriety, standing at 12-inches tall. Coming with collectible box art and custom handmade clothing, this Barlow figure went quicker than most of the Distinctive Dummies, leaving it currently out of stock. However, due to high demand, these figures went fast, so good luck tracking them down at the original list price of $100.

Our sixth, and last, Toy of Terror is one of John Carpenter’s most mystical creations, and one of Funko’s literally brightest achievements: Lo-Pan from BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA! Once again standing 3 and 3/4 inches tall, this vinyl POP! Lo-Pan turns green and glows-in-the-dark, making him a great Carpenter collector’s item. Available this June, you can STILL pre-order Lo-Pan for $11.99 here.
