What happens when a highlight South African Gothic Rock act from Johannesburg moves to the U.S. and merges with a talented underground Goth/Industrial act from Decatur Illinois?  A beautiful mix of ethereal dark romantic music to make angels and vampires alike weep for wanting.  The Awakening originally began as a festival headlining Goth act pioneering vocally dripping lilting dark rock in an environment that initially wasn’t open to the genre.  Through hard work and sacrifice Ashton Nyte and Rose Mortem built a name for themselves as a music sensation.  Spirit Child fronted by the iconclastic artistic genius of Tiavi Rudrow and Leesa Jozsa began as an industrial rock act headlining festivals in Chicago and have been featured opening  with such acts as The Last Dance and The Cruxshadows.

When Ashton and rose saw the opportunity to cross the pond and make a splash stateside, they jumped at the opportunity.  Meeting up with Tiavi and Leesa sealed the gap in establishing a new line up and establishing a new aggressive nightmarish element to the Romantic act.  The Resultant album TALES OF ABSOLUTION & OBSOLETION is now out on The Awakenings self release label Intervention Arts.

From the opening riffs of “Ivory” the album sets a cloudy cemetery atmosphere with Bowie-esque deep vocals and crawling guitars.  “Upon The Water” rips up the track with dreamy guitar riffs and beckoning croons. “A Carnival of Souls” sweeps you up with a Horror Rock feel as the sweeping drums and gritty guitar licks rip up the track.   “Frozen” hearkens to the early era of Bauhaus post-punk rock with light distorted backbeat synth and vampy guitar licks.  “Prayer for the song” raises Goosebumps as Ashton lets loose with tenebrous tongue.  “Alone” closes out the album with ghoulish organs in a track where you can feel spiders chittering and crawling in dark castles.

TALES OF ABSOLUTION & OBSOLETION marks a groundbreaking U.S. debut for The Awakening.  The act creates imperial and mist shrouded dark music harkening back to the ambient Romantic avenue of Gothic Rock with enough anachronistic touches to delight the most stolid of vamp music lovers while still solidly hooking the modern nightmare edge.  It is evocative and predatory, sensual and yet carnal.  It is in short a night stalkers delight and expect tracks to make Goth Club smashes soon.  The Awakening is currently prepping for their first whirlwind tour starting in August with the new line up.  Be prepared for a sweeping Romantigoth revival.
