Aside from a horse's head in my bed or a body in the trunk that I didn't put there, I generally like surprises. With that, I can honestly say that Canadian band Starring Janet Leigh has crafted an album called SPECTRUM (out now on Ironclad) that was a more than welcome surprise...
Few bands are capable of pulling off the kind of musical schizophrenia that SJL attempts, with most falling into a category best labeled as "sonic garbage." SJL rises above with an incredible nine-song set of genre-bending adventure that places them firmly in a class that includes Candiria, Between the Buried and Me, and Mr. Bungle before them.
With time signatures that can change at an instant, SJL throws their explosive cocktail of death metal, jazz, and noise firmly into one's head, forcing you crave more, while earning their namesake as a band that only a select kind of PSYCHO can enjoy.

- FUN FACT: At 1:27 into the final track, "Wrath" the band manages to drop in an unexpected nod to Green Day's "Brain Stew."

Finally a Canadian extreme technical metal band worthy of international recognition.
