Independent animator Bill Plympton has been bringing his unique, off-kilter comedic sensibilities to the screen for a few decades now, and several years back, he ventured into genre territory with the feature HAIR HIGH. Yet the film hasn’t managed to break out past the festival/limited-release circuit—until now; Fango got the scoop that it’ll finally hit DVD this summer.

Argentina has been an occasional supplier of horror fare, from the films of Daniel de la Vega (CHRONICLE OF THE RAVEN, DEATH KNOWS YOUR NAME) to the Fango Video title PLAGA ZOMBIE to the recent U.S. DVD release THE APPEARED, and now Pampa Films, one of the country’s major production houses, is getting into the genre in a big way.

One more revisitation of classic ’80s horror is moving closer to fruition with the news that a director has signed on to FRIGHT NIGHT, the update of the 1985 favorite about a suburban vampire, for DreamWorks.

After Dark Films has announced that it has pacted with Lionsgate (its regular DVD distributor) and the Syfy channel for another lineup of features. As opposed to the 8 Films to Die For in After Dark’s previous Horrorfests, however, these will not be acquisitions but original productions.

New iterations of famous monsters, legends and myths have been a constant for fans to contend with, their nostalgia often shaping the way they believe their favorite creatures should be presented. Today, one need look no further for an example than the plight of the vampire. Having witnessed the creatures of the night giving way to mopey idols for tweens, horror buffs have been nothing short of mortified at their lack of bite. Inspired by a similar mishandling of the nosferatu—albeit the previous craze—Scott Snyder and Vertigo Comics have created AMERICAN VAMPIRE just in time to help soothe the current generation of disgruntled genre lovers.

Among the genre films vying for attention at the currently running South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, TX is Gareth Edwards’ MONSTERS—and the movie has landed a domestic distributor before the event is even half over.

Universal has had a disappointing time at the box office over the past year, with the well-reviewed but commercially underwhelming GREEN ZONE just the latest in a series of underperformers. A recent Los Angeles Times blog posited that the studio’s upcoming revisiting of THE THING could help turn its fortunes around, and got some comments from the producers.

Busy British producer Jonathan Sothcott of Black and Blue Films got in touch with a couple of exclusive photos and the poster for the undead-action opus THE DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, plus word on some more genre projects in development. “We wrapped DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND last week, and it looks amazing,” he tells us.

Welcome to hell. It’s as good a place as any to start talking horror and spirituality. I’m sure our ongoing conversation will take us to other places as well, but hell…hell is a place that burns up BS. That seems like a good starting point to me.
