FANGORIA’s FrightFest (see previous item here and go to www.fangoriafrightfest.com for more details) is nearing its summer debut, and one of the films yearning for your votes to win a theatrical release in the on-line sweepstakes is the chilling ghost story FRAGILE (see exclusive trailer below the jump and on our homepage rotator), directed by acclaimed Spanish helmer Jaume Balagueró ([REC] movies, DARKNESS, THE NAMELESS). We previously debuted the art and specs for the FRAGILE DVD, which hits stores August 6, here.

With Catherine Hardwicke doing a new Gothic take on RED RIDING HOOD, it’s inevitable that other grim fairy tales are in the works for the screen. Now comes word that SNOW WHITE is the next to be given a darker shade.

Guillermo Del Toro announced that he’s no longer directing the two movies based on J.R.R Tolkien’s “THE HOBBIT.” However, he will continue to co-write the screenplays.

While in NYC, BEST WORST MOVIE director/TROLL 2 child actor Michael Paul Stephenson and leading man Dr. George Hardy spoke with Fango’s Tony Timpone about both films (see part two of our lengthy chat here). In part three (see below the jump), Stephenson talks about the groundswell of fan appreciation for TROLL 2 that brought him to make BEST WORST MOVIE.

With SHUTTER ISLAND, Martin Scorsese’s ultra-stylish (and oddly underrated) salute to ’40s noir and color-crazy Mario Bava horror movies hitting DVD and Blu-ray June 8, Fango sat down with the man who created the eerie, Freudian frightfest in print: best-selling, Boston-born author Dennis Lehane. The author—whose novels also served as the blueprints for Clint Eastwood’s MYSTIC RIVER and Ben Affleck’s GONE BABY GONE—is no stranger to mining the darker recesses of the human condition, but SHUTTER ISLAND is the closest he has come so far to creating a horror show.

I guess ANIMALS did have an effect on me. Not a positive one—but, as with the movie’s protagonist, it brought out the animal within me. In my case, though, I didn’t transform into a powerful, emboldened, fearless wolf creature. Rather, I metamorphosed into a venomous snake—which should explain the forthcoming virulent criticism of this woefully regrettable film, which is best described as 9 1/2 WEEKS meets THE WOLF MAN. Oh, and if you don’t want to read a detailed breakdown of Marc Blucas’ buttocks, then proceed no further…

The youth-slasher genre gets religious with BLOODY BLOODY BIBLE CAMP, an indie feature that just wrapped principal photography. Director Vito Trabucco gave us the scoop, and he and makeup FX artist Marcus Koch passed on some exclusive photos and the first poster, which you can see after the jump.

Writer/director Jay Woelfel gave us a quick update and passed on some exclusive new pics (see ’em below the jump) on his fright feature CLOSED FOR THE SEASON, which premiered at New Jersey’s Monster-Mania convention earlier this year. “I’ve tightened the edit since then,” he tells Fango, “the final FX have been cut in and the 5.1 stereo mix is done.”

Media Blasters sent Fango the content info for a pair of upcoming Asian-genre-film releases: DEATH KAPPA (pictured), which hits DVD and a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack July 27, and ULTIMATE MACHINE GIRL, a special three-disc collectors’ tin that streets June 29.

The latest trailer for director Saiyon Srisawat’s horror film “TAKIEN: HAUNTED TREE” has hit the web.

With over 100 years of cinema to look back upon, I tend to cut genre movies a bit of slack when it comes to original ideas; let’s face it, there really isn’t a whole lot that’s new under the sun when it comes to terror flicks. With that little caveat accepted, there’s certainly some fun to be had from seeing an idea that isn’t just old, but even hackneyed, being run through the mill one more time, as long as there’s a fresh point of view operating behind it that adds a whole new dimension of fun or thrills into the mix.

The title of HYSTERICAL PSYCHO (currently awaiting theatrical release after assorted festival dates) refers to at least one of the characters and is a pretty good description of the movie itself as well. It’s a berserk, over-the-top, wildly uneven assault of humorous and homagistic horror that’s decidedly not for all tastes—but those who do enjoy its flavor are gonna eat it up.
