Michigan-based writer/director/producer Matthew Roth makes his feature debut with THE MAN WHO COLLECTED FOOD, coming on DVD next month after winning numerous festival prizes. The filmmaker gave us a few comments on the movie to go with the disc specs and art.

The MAN in question is Miguel (Mike N. Kelly), who feels compelled to keep the food he hoards unopened and in mint condition. Therefore, he needs to live off something… “The innocence of a collector, mixed with the savageness of a cannibal,” is how Roth puts it to Fango; that’s right, Miguel eats human flesh in order to survive. Kept in his walk-in freezer are two kinds of people: long-dead ones with missing pieces, hanging like meat for when he wants a simple dinner, and live, gagged ones for those times he feels like “playing with his food.”

“The cast were all from the Michigan area, and were absolutely great,” Roth tells us; the principal cast also includes Gary Wagner, Lila Miller, Russ Fox and Joey Uretta. The filmmaker also promises viewers a plethora of gore FX: “There’s a woman getting her toes cut off and fed on, a high-speed sequence involving a man having his cheek ripped apart and an alien’s head being blown off,” Roth reveals, though we’re not sure where the extraterrestrial comes in.

The disc debuts from Media Blasters July 12 on the Shriek Show label, with a widescreen transfer, 2.0 stereo audio and the following extras:

• Cast/crew interviews

• Behind-the-scenes featurette

• Still gallery

• Trailer
