In a rather ironic turn of events, Miramax, the company
founded and once run by Harvey and Bob Weinstein before they departed in a
dispute with parent company Disney, has announced a partnership with the
brothers’ Weinstein Company to produce sequels to films in the Miramax library.
While the first movies in the pipeline are follow-ups to BAD SANTA, ROUNDERS
and SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (!?), some genre titles are inevitably on the slate.
Although it was already sequelized twice, get ready for more continuations of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN (pictured), along with at least one more AMITYVILLE HORROR flick and SCARY MOVIE 5. “We are very close to these films,” the Weinsteins said in a joint statement, “and the new management of Miramax also feels that we are in the best position to create sequels that are at once worthy and compelling in their own right. We look forward to working with [Miramax CEO Mike Lang] and his team on getting these films into production as soon as possible, and extending our partnership in the years ahead.” Adds Weinstein Co. COO David Glasser. “This is the perfect addition to our ongoing slate, giving us the ability to work on already existing franchises that have had such lucrative success at the box office, as well as a great starting ground to our newfound relationship. We clearly believe it will be mutually beneficial for both companies.” The Weinstein Co., of course, already has SCREAM 4 set for release April 15, 2011 and is prepping PIRANHA 3DD for next August.
