The American dream is a dream like no other. Jobs line streets of gold, vacuum cleaners and TVs sit in every house, and families gathered each night to eat hot meals made lovingly by Mom. Everything seemed perfect; an idea of Middle America that has inspired generations. But underneath every love story sits a horror so dark and disturbing that Norman Rockwell himself would spin in his grave if he ever got wind of it—a horror of family secrets and broken dreams, where things beyond the human redemption can happen even in the quietest of suburbia. This is the premise for THE MILKMAN MURDERS, a comic so thoroughly fucked up and heart-wrenching, that if you finish reading it unscathed, you probably don't have a heart. In fact, feel free to feel bad about yourself right now.

Full Disclosure: This writer was not a fan of the “Twisted Twins’” maiden cinematic voyage, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. Made on a budget by Vancouver’s Jen and Sylvia Soska, the cheapie action comedy is scrappy and full of indie energy but is also shrill, choked with gratuitous, numbing profanity and–outside of the twins themselves—generally poor performances. But what did appeal was the maverick way the sisters managed to push their product, using social media, forums and general upbeat fan-friendly enthusiasm to build a legacy as not only burgeoning filmmakers, but masters of entrepreneurial business sense, whipping up a mass frenzy about their next project, something called AMERICAN MARY….

That's right, folks, she is back! From the pages of KICK-ASS to your frontal lobe, Hit-Girl has returned to punch you straight in the jaw in her very own miniseries. And before you ask, yes, she's just as foul-mouthed and adorable as ever. Hit-Girl is all about the trials and tribulations of the pint-sized former super heroine struggling to adjust to a normal life. No more high octane thrills, no more brain damaging car chases, just a nice, steady life of school, family, and cuddling with a teddy bear. Of course, no twelve year-old girl with a thirst for justice can possibly stay straight forever, and this comic treats us to a fantastic explosion of ultra-violence and mob war.

The word “homage” is a battered old mare when it comes to horror, with many a filmmaker confusing the term—which can most appropriately be applied to directors like Brian De Palma or Quentin Tarantino, who graft elements and DNA of pictures they admire onto fresh frameworks—with ripoff. Look at the “grindhouse” phenomenon, a dubious and meaningless label that has given birth to an endless parade of pink-tinted, fake-aged visuals and replicant movements creating works that are by now rather tired, unimaginative and poor Xeroxes of the accidentally awesome trash classics they ape.

Cal McDonald is a hard living, hard drinking, son-of-a-bitch that takes no crap from anyone, living or dead. He'll take any case as long you pay, from finding lost dogs to exorcising ghosts. Unfortunately for him, it's usually the latter of the two. CRIMINAL MACABRE has been a staple of creator Steve Niles’ repertoire for as long as he’s been writing. His first appearance in 1990 has since spawned several limited comics series and three books, making Cal McDonald everyone's favorite supernatural detective. CRIMINAL MACABRE: THE IRON SPIRIT, is a new addition to the mythos, once again shoving Cal into the strange and unknown world of ghosts, ghouls, and grudges.

THE POSSESSION is a far more generic title than the film’s original moniker THE DIBBUK BOX, and it’s a transition reflected in the movie itself. What starts out with a fairly distinctive scenario and threat eventually segues into overly familiar territory, though not without occasional chilling pleasures along the way.

Have you heard that the high-definition transfer on Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s new JAWS Blu-ray is stunningly beautiful? That the sound is vivid and powerful? That the disc is a must-own? You heard correctly.
