You know those cheap, tossed-together haunted attractions that plague boardwalk theme parks and traveling carnivals nationwide? You’d go as a kid and think, even at the tender age of 10, that the mechanical monsters and spring-loaded specters were no match for that creepy ol’ toothless sideshow host who could not only guess your weight but check your prostate as well? Oh, childhood memories…

This month, classic fright fans had reason to rejoice with the long-awaited release of Diamond Select Toys’ first line of figures outside the superhero realm. The award-winning company unveiled Universal Select, offering a terrifying tag team of “Deluxe” Universal Monsters figures. You would think that a board game based loosely on Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 cult classic THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD could not possibly be anything short of infectious fun. You would think this, however, until you actually sat down and played Twilight Creations’ newest expansion of its nine-year-old ZOMBIES!!! board game. Last year, Blood Energy Potion, a little plastic bag of red liquid covered in claims that it “contain[ed] similar nutritional value to blood,” was marketed as a horror-themed alternative to the overcaffeinated calorie bombs being sold as energy drinks. I found myself enjoying the stuff, especially when heated and served in a skull-shaped chalice, so I was perfectly happy when a new novelty IV bag, Zombie Blood Energy Potion, was sent along to review.

The land of 12-inch horror figures was once ruled by Sideshow Collectibles. Back in the day, they put out some amazing Universal monster, Freddy, Jason, Leatherface and TWILIGHT ZONE figures. They’d still be king to this day if they hadn’t started concentrating more on non-horror licenses. Well, lucky for us, a 1/6-scale savior has risen in its place: Amok Time.

This tribute to the eldritch author comes in the form of some of the most ornate and detailed sculptures available for public consumption.
