There’s something skin-crawling about horror when it has real vibrancy, when ghastly acts of the body and mind take place in living, energetic color. Oftentimes, classic Italian frights were saturated in a wide palette, where even the blood is bright yet simultaneously off-putting. Raro Video’s recent DVD release of Francesco Barilli’s THE PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK showcases nothing short of a soaring example of such, both stunning to watch and eerie when considered.

When I was asked to review HOUSE OF SIN (coming, along with the zombie flick THE DEFILED, on DVD from Chemical Burn Entertainment March 22), I honestly got a bit excited! But then I found out we weren’t talking about the X-rated 1982 classic staring “Long” Jean Silver and Robert Kerman of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST fame. Nope, we’re talking a 2010 softcore S&M flick staring Sarah “The Slave” Dunn and John Symes of…uhhh…HOUSE OF SIN fame. Oh well.

It’s kind of amazing that in 2010, years after the zombie craze reignited—and oversaturation had long been an issue—audiences received one of the most refreshing and exciting undead tales yet. But on the same note, and possibly because of its mostly stellar quality, it didn’t take much to get caught up in the whirlwind of excitement surrounding THE WALKING DEAD when it first aired. This week’s release of its initial season on DVD and Blu-ray by Anchor Bay offers the chance to reevaluate the first six episodes in hopes they measure up to just how excellent most thought they were.

Horror is a beautiful and broad universe, but after years of targeting arty intellectuals, outsider gorehounds and/or teenaged girls, a vampire film has finally arrived for a demographic often sadly overlooked: “bros who wear Affliction.” Thus, if you find yourself driving home from Club Karma, still buzzed off your Red Bull and vodka, craving a late-night meatball/Muscle Milk/movie combo but 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS has worn out its welcome, I give you THE BLEEDING.

Yes, yes—grindhouse movies of yesteryear are clumsy, gross and silly. We get it. For those who don’t, here’s a 76-minute geek-out inspired by the likes of CANNIBAL FEROX, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD, LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET and TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD from Dire Wit Films, the folks who brought you ISLE OF THE DAMNED.

The tagline on Lionsgate’s DVD of VIRUS X reads, “The Threat Is Real.” If this refers to the threat of narcolepsy during the lackluster snoozefest encased within it, then the warning is a valid one. Despite watching the flick at 10 in the morning, I found myself being lulled to sleep by the numerous pockets of inactivity; it seems to take forever for the inevitable outbreak to occur. Once it does, there is a lot of crying and a lot of yelling.
