Leave it to Brian Keene to revamp the horror genre. His mesmerizing novels of visceral terror have spooked any number of horror fans, causing the prolific writer to become one of Leisure Books’ most popular authors.
Eric Garcia is the author of the ANONYMOUS REX series, MATCHSTICK MEN and CASSANDRA FRENCH’S FINISHING SCHOOL FOR BOYS. His latest work, REPO MEN, was initially published as THE REPOSSESSION MAMBO last year, but was retitled and rereleased in March to coincide with Universal Pictures’ film adaptation hitting theaters March 19.
Artist Isabel Samaras has become know for her iconic pop-culture artwork featuring not only countless movie monsters, but also many other TV greats including characters from BEWITCHED and THE MUNSTERS. Born in New York City, she moved to the suburbs of Washington, D.C. when she was young, but New York is a city with a strong gravitational pull, and shortly after graduating high school, she returned home.
Lock and load, people, for this is a very special article. Harry Bromley Davenport, the enfant terrible behind XTRO—a British video nasty from the early 1980s that he’s about to sequelize again (see item here)—does not mince his words in this interview regarding his latest shocker, HAUNTED ECHOES (out today on DVD from E1), complemented by a few exclusive pics. Harry is clearly a man not to cross—as we found out…
How can such a tiny thing kick butt so effectively? That’s the first thing this writer thinks upon meeting actress Radha Mitchell at a post-screening Q & A for THE CRAZIES, Overture Films’ remake of the George A. Romero cult fave directed by Breck Eisner, in which she stars. But as soon as she opens her mouth, the reason becomes apparent: Mitchell may not be a giant among women, but she is fearless about staring down whatever challenges come her way.
Horror was everywhere on the big and small screens last year, and—in the limited/DVD sector, at least—it was hellishly hard to narrow down nominees for our latest Chainsaw Awards to five. (A couple of movies, like I SELL THE DEAD and ANTICHRIST, will wait till next year when they’ve had wider U.S. disc exposure.) Now it’s time for you to choose the winners.
My need to hold onto outdated technology was finally rewarded when Fango’s Bekah McKendry stumbled upon a box of VHS tapes discarded from a local Blockbuster. Yeah, I have a VCR. And yeah, I have a sizable collection of VHS tapes that I still watch. Some movies just work better on VHS—it manages to capture the original feeling of the film, and in the case of Ken Russell’s 1980 film ALTERED STATES, the format manages to make a cult classic still feel relevant. Why would Blockbuster ever throw this away?
It’s probably safe to say that Eli Roth has never been busier than he is these days. He’s celebrating the Lionsgate Blu-ray release of his breakout feature CABIN FEVER, in a director’s cut that reflects his true vision; THE LAST EXORCISM, on which he was a producer, was recently picked up in a high-profile deal by the ‘gate for theatrical release; he’s got a batch of new movies in development with the EXORCISM team; and he’s been hitting the awards circuit for Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, in which he has a co-starring role and which is up for eight Oscars on March 7.
