FANGORIA® HORROR MOVIES AND TV

For the first weekend in May, the sun is usually burning high, the flowers are all in bloom, there is an occasional puddle here and there from a recent passing thunderstorm and before too long there are…ghouls, ghosts and goblins dead in your sights? Well, in one part of the country, there definitely are.

When pondering iconic cinematic power couples, one pair who are never likely to be thought of are Michael and Roberta Findlay. The two have been appropriately dubbed “the most notorious filmmakers in the annals of sexploitation.” Meshing sex and sadism into one nasty mix, the couple took over the underground market of New York grindhouse theaters.

Fango recently caught up with comedian Brian Posehn, whom genre fans will know better as an occasional actor on Rob Zombie projects like THE DEVIL’S REJECTS and THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO. Posehn took some time off from his current tour to talk about his new epic heavy metal/comedy album FART AND WIENER JOKES (out now on Relapse Records) and some potential horror projects.

Last November at New York City’s 92YTribeca, fans of Robin Hardy’s 1973 British horror classic THE WICKER MAN got a special treat. Not only was a 35mm print of the movie screened with Hardy in attendance, but the director unveiled 10 minutes of clips from his latest feature THE WICKER TREE (formerly known as COWBOYS FOR CHRIST). Fango got a chance to speak with Hardy exclusively about the new project, which was partially encouraged by the misbegotten 2006 remake of THE WICKER MAN starring Nicolas Cage.

Volatile Games and Namco Bandai’s recently released DEAD TO RIGHTS: RETRIBUTION is the latest incarnation of the classic series that pits a lone-wolf cop and his faithful dog against the scum of fictional Grant City. This franchise has always been known for its innovations in a very well-worn genre: the third-person shooter.

One would expect a film with supernatural elements in which the pivotal event is the murder of a 14-year-old girl by a serial killer to be a horror film, a thriller, a revenge story or some combination of all of the above. Yet THE LOVELY BONES (now out on DVD and Blu-ray from Paramount) is none of the above.

In a genre that so heavily features leading ladies, strong heroines and final girls, we still haven’t had many memorable ones as of late. Except, of course, THE DESCENT’s Sarah Carter. Traumatized by the deaths of her husband and daughter, betrayed by her best friend, possibly a little mad and yet still mustering up the wherewithal to bash monster skulls, she was played with emotional depth and notable strength by Scottish actress Shauna MacDonald in Neil Marshall’s original film, and returns to the caves in THE DESCENT: PART 2 (now out on DVD from Lionsgate).

“Welcome to FRIGHT NIGHT.” It’s hard to believe writer/director Tom Holland’s film is 25 years old. And upon learning of DreamWorks’ plans to remake it (with LARS AND THE REAL GIRL’s Craig Gillespie directing Marti Noxon’s script), I decided to revisit the 1985 original and see how it has stood the test of time. My verdict: “You’re still cool, Brewster!”
