Riverview Hospital sits on a palatial mountainside overlooking Coquitlam, B.C., just outside of Vancouver. Dedicated in 1904, the place was built as a psychiatric facility designed to house British Columbia’s mentally ill populace. It was originally intended to accommodate 1800 patients, but its population soon increased to more than 4600. Over the years, many a lost soul dwelled within the numerous structures that dotted its 244 acres of wooded landscape.

Ever since George A. Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD first sparked horror fans’ love affair with the zombie, the walking dead have lumbered (and run!) into all facets of popular culture, most notably the video-game world. From UK company Quicksilva’s ZOMBIE ZOMBIE for the ZK Spectrum computer in 1984 through such staples as Capcom’s RESIDENT EVIL and even non-horror games like the CALL OF DUTY series, the undead have been unavoidable, and in 2006, Capcom decided to take them in another direction with the open-world slaughterthon DEAD RISING.

Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s THE FALL (Book II in the authors’ STRAIN trilogy) debuted last week and already has fanboys clamoring for more, due to del Toro’s dedicated cinematic following and the huge international success of the series’ first installment in 2009 (it sold to 27 foreign publishers). You can find out more about THE STRAIN here. In Part One of FANGORIA’s exclusive interview, dark imagineer del Toro talks about Book II, his collaborative process with Hogan (pictured) and the grim places THE FALL explores.

Provocative, grim, shocking and extremely anti-establishment in their outlook, British director Pete Walker’s “terror” films were always controversial—perhaps due to their frequent representation of an unsavory, seedy underbelly of a British society governed by convention and hypocrisy. With his previous movies, notably HOUSE OF WHIPCORD, FRIGHTMARE and HOUSE OF MORTAL SIN (a.k.a. THE CONFESSIONAL), Walker had actively worked to subvert typically British institutions (such as class, family and the legal system) and outrage as many people as he possibly could by presenting cannibalistic pensioners, murderous priests and private prisons controlled by sadistic wardens.

Jeffrey Combs first became a horror icon in 1985, exploring the outer limits of medicine to extremely gruesome ends as RE-ANIMATOR’s Herbert West. Twenty-five years later, Combs is back in DARK HOUSE, using a different kind of cutting-edge science to enhance a haunted attraction—with equally dire results.

With zombie noir film fest fave FLICK steadily approaching its October 26 DVD release (see previous item here) from Peace Arch Entertainment, Fango had a few words—and some exclusive storyboards and illustrated panels from the film—with the man responsible for the film’s distinctive visual style, graphic artist and illustrator Alex Tomlinson. First seizing the attention of writer/director David Howard through his illustrative work featured in FORTEAN TIMES, the filmmakers asked Tomlinson to put together a series of designs, which evolved from some simple supplementary material to help pitch the project, to a full-fledged, self-contained comic book universe telling the story of Johnny “Flick” Taylor, the awkwardly shy introvert with a penchant for rockabilly and murder in 1960s Britain.
