Actress Briana Evigan has been all over the fright genre in the last couple of years, yet she has managed not to do the same kind of horror story twice. She faced zombies in FEAR ITSELF’s NEW YEARS DAY episode, a slasher in SORORITY ROW and the surreal genre-blending of S. DARKO, with the home-invasion shocks of Darren Lynn Bousman’s MOTHER’S DAY coming up next. And this month saw Lionsgate’s DVD release of BURNING BRIGHT, an animal-attack entry in which Evigan shares the screen with a very hungry tiger.

Horror sometimes makes good bedfellows with other genres, producing strange and exciting genetic mashups. EVIL DEAD II is a horror/comedy with both chainsaw dismemberment and Three Stooges-style slapstick. NEAR DARK is a horror/Western with bloodsucking vampires roving the desert as lawless bandits. PIG HUNT is…well, not that easy to describe. While the straight synopsis would tell you it’s about a group of people who go into the forests of Northern California to hunt down an SUV-size boar, that really doesn’t do the film justice.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE. In the 20th century, there has probably been nothing more integral to the development of science fiction and horror television as a legitimate storytelling medium than this show. One of the few genre ventures to be overwhelmingly embraced by critics and audiences alike, Rod Serling’s classic anthology series is truly one-of-a-kind. Unfortunately, so was the man, and after his death, no revival of the show has ever managed to match its initial greatness. Until now.

When discussing a film called HUNGER, you’re naturally inclined to chuckle a bit if the director says, “We had an amazing caterer. She fed the crew big, hearty meals.” But it’s also part of a larger point that Steven Hentges is making about independent filmmaking at the moment, and it makes a ton of sense. “On a low-budget film, the best thing you can do is feed your crew well,” he notes.
