In part one (see here) of our exclusive interview with Mexican filmmaker and author Guillermo del Toro, the HELLBOY director previewed his latest novel, THE FALL, co-written by Chuck Hogan and available now from William Morrow. THE FALL arrives as Book II in the authors’ epic STRAIN Trilogy, the apocalyptic story of the death of mankind and the rise of a race of malignant vampires. Del Toro continues his discussion below, giving insight into his creative process, details his obsession with bloodsuckers, dishes on upcoming works and reveals just how he manages to juggle so many projects at once.

In Part One of this story, director Christian Alvart noted the advantages of having veteran actors like Renée Zellweger and Ian McShane toplining CASE 39 (opening this Friday, October 1 from Paramount Vantage). But serving as the true catalyst for the film’s story, in which a social worker rescues a young girl from an apparently abusive home and discovers that she’s not as innocent as she seemed, is Jodelle Ferland as the child in question.

Riverview Hospital sits on a palatial mountainside overlooking Coquitlam, B.C., just outside of Vancouver. Dedicated in 1904, the place was built as a psychiatric facility designed to house British Columbia’s mentally ill populace. It was originally intended to accommodate 1800 patients, but its population soon increased to more than 4600. Over the years, many a lost soul dwelled within the numerous structures that dotted its 244 acres of wooded landscape.

Ever since George A. Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD first sparked horror fans’ love affair with the zombie, the walking dead have lumbered (and run!) into all facets of popular culture, most notably the video-game world. From UK company Quicksilva’s ZOMBIE ZOMBIE for the ZK Spectrum computer in 1984 through such staples as Capcom’s RESIDENT EVIL and even non-horror games like the CALL OF DUTY series, the undead have been unavoidable, and in 2006, Capcom decided to take them in another direction with the open-world slaughterthon DEAD RISING.

Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s THE FALL (Book II in the authors’ STRAIN trilogy) debuted last week and already has fanboys clamoring for more, due to del Toro’s dedicated cinematic following and the huge international success of the series’ first installment in 2009 (it sold to 27 foreign publishers). THE STRAIN trilogy details the apocalyptic battle between man and vampire, and vampire vs. vampire, as a bloodsucker virus spreads around the globe, decimating humanity and rocking civilization to its core.
