Long considered by more cerebral horror film fanatics to be the most powerful of George A. Romero’s original zombie trilogy, DAY OF THE DEAD celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Highlighted by the intense performances of (well-regarded theatrical actress and installation artist) Lori Cardille as heroine Sarah and (former pro football player and current memoirist) Gary (a.k.a. G. Howard) Klar as Steele, DAY will be honored by a special screening at Chicago’s Terror in the Aisles 3 this weekend, with Cardille and Klar in attendance.

Looking at the list of elite directors whose participation alone Hollywood can open a megabudgeted production, Tim Burton’s name would seem the least likely to be penciled in alongside your Steven Spielbergs and your Michael Bays. Yet Burton, the former Disney animator with a morbid sense of humor, macabre visual motifs and penchant for championing outsiders and oddballs, has seen his work resonate with audiences and tally billion-dollar box-office grosses.

“Alternate history” tales are almost always fascinating. When talented authors utilize a time period to explore fresh concepts and create parallels to today, it can often be a unique and thought-provoking journey—and it’s also always fun to see the undead terrorize our ancestors. With that in mind, the brother-and-sister team of Zane Grant and actress Brea Grant (whose credits include HALLOWEEN II and MIDNIGHT MOVIE) created WE WILL BURY YOU, a four-issue miniseries from IDW Publishing now out in a trade paperback collection.

The newest member of our creative team, whose latest book is entitled SWEET ROT, here shares his observations on his artwork, his interests in horror and music and his other recent projects.

Guillermo del Toro has been extending his creative abilities in numerous directions lately, developing and consulting on a number of new features in both live action and animation. In between all this activity, the genre giant found time recently to oversee new Criterion disc releases of his 1992 debut feature CRONOS, and gave Fango the details on that project as well as updates on some of his other movies.

Modern horror fans can be in a tough position when attempting to be responsible parents. While many of us got into the genre specifically because our elders forbade it, one of the joys of having children is introducing them to the cool stuff we love. So when your personal interests center around images of bodily dismemberment, you have to make decisions as to how high is too low to hang certain movie posters, or how far you’ll allow a 3-year-old into your rec room.

Most hardcore horror fans, and zombie fans in particular, have envisioned the scenario. You know, the one in which the dead rise up and everything turns to crap. You imagine how it might go down…what you might do…what it would take to survive. It’s a fascinating topic, and one of which we zombie freaks never seem to tire. And thanks to the ingenious work of Lance Meyer, we can have a little bit of help envisioning the flesheating apocalypse.
