FEARFUL FEATURES

With the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival upon us, FANGORIA readers have plenty to get excited about. From the delirium of BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO, to the ballistic omnibus THE ABCs OF DEATH; from Rob Zombie’s THE LORDS OF SALEM to JT Petty’s THE HELLBENDERS; from THE SHINING doc ROOM 237 to the sexually bent THALE, terror is a major presence at the fest.

With her 20th birthday arriving next month, Emily Hagins has only a little while longer to enjoy (or endure) the label of “teen filmmaker.” She has by now earned the simple designation of filmmaker, with three features (all horror-oriented) under her belt, including today’s DVD/Blu-ray release, the vampire comedy MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE.

Jacen Burrows has carved his name into the horror world through artwork as deranged as it is brilliant. Still a rising star, he’s come a long way in his short career and though his comic styling is as distinctive as Mike Mignola and Ben Templesmith, even these masters don't hold a candle when it comes to the sheer, no-holds barred brutality that sweep the pages of Burrows’ work. His eye for detail and large, splash pages of blood and depravity is similar to old school ultraviolent sleaze, where the harder you look, the harder you have to try to pull away.

The anthology is primed to make a big comeback, and V/H/S is at the forefront. With the time honored tradition of the omnibus meeting found footage halfway, the film offers a new perspective on a classic subgenre, with some of horror's brightest newcomers behind it all. After months of post-Sundance anticipation, the film hits VOD tomorrow, August 30 from Magnolia Pictures and Magnet Releasing. FANGORIA spoke to the myriad of filmmakers contributing to V/H/S and below, you can take in our chat with A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE's Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, as we talk their wraparound segment, "Tape 56," filming our whole lives and much of the criticism directed towards V/H/S and its gender roles.

Kerry Prior, writer/director of THE REVENANT, the knockout black-comic horror movie currently in limited release (see part one here), the filmmaker talks capturing big locations and FX on a small budget, the joys of festivals and a truly bizarre-sounding follow-up project…

“When a fresh-faced nanny arrives at her new job on a creaky farm in the English countryside, she is instantly caught up in the turbulent relationship of her employers. James is struggling to provide for his family and Rachel, an inexperienced mother, is unable to cope with the demands of her newborn baby.

What’s not quite a vampire and not quite a zombie? It’s the star of THE REVENANT, which is not your usual vampire or zombie movie either. Imaginatively grisly and unconventionally funny, it’s a full-blooded mix of horror and comedy that never stops shocking and surprising you, and a small triumph for writer/director D. Kerry Prior.

Writer/director Todd Lincoln sees his first feature, the supernatural horror film THE APPARITION, open nationwide from Warner Bros. this Friday, August 24. It’s the latest and most significant step in Lincoln’s journey through the fright realm, which has encompassed some of the genre’s biggest and smallest names and once saw him working DUSK TILL DAWN.
