How’s this for a match made in…hell?! The creators of the SAW and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchises have teamed up for INSIDIOUS, a superscary haunted house chiller guaranteed to have you jumping out of your seat (see Fango’s advance review here). Over the next week or so, Fangoria.com will be presenting exclusive video chats (directed and edited by Bill Hall) with Australian filmmakers Whannell and Wan. Today actor/screenwriter Whannell talks with Fango’s Tony Timpone about INSIDIOUS’ plot and the development of the script.
Opening April 1 from FilmDistrict, INSIDIOUS pays tribute to such horror classics as CARNIVAL OF SOULS, THE EXORCIST and POLTERGEIST. Renais (28 WEEKS LATER’s Rose Byrne) and her husband Josh (HARD CANDY’s Patrick Wilson) are still unpacking boxes in their new home when she first senses a sinister presence. Eerie events steadily escalate into supernatural attacks, until one day oldest son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) slips into a baffling coma. Renais and Josh abandon their ghost-ridden abode and attempt to heal their broken family, turning to an unorthodox expert in paranormal occurrences (2001 MANIACS’ Lin Shaye). Chillingly, they soon discover—it’s not the house that’s haunted… Barbara Hershey (BLACK SWAN, THE ENTITY, RIDING THE BULLET) costars in the film, which was produced by PARANORMAL ACTIVITY’s Oren Peli, Jason Blum and Steven Schneider.
