Director Stephen T. Kay, who has mostly done TV since 2005’s BOOGEYMAN, has gotten back into feature horror in a big way lately. He’s set to direct the Poe-based THE USHERS this fall (see item here) and shot the Eva Amurri-starring chiller ISOLATION earlier this year, and an already-completed film he helmed in Canada is now headed for theatrical release.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Freestyle Releasing has acquired CELL 213, which Kay directed for the Cinesavvy company, and is targeting a fall big-screen debut. Maninder Chana scripted the movie, which stars Eric Balfour, Bruce Greenwood and Michael Rooker and features makeup FX by GINGER SNAPS’ Paul Jones. The story concerns a cocky young attorney (Balfour) who is framed for the murder of an incarcerated client and winds up imprisoned in the titular space, where God and the devil battle for his soul. Freestyle’s previous titles have included THE COLLECTOR, THE HAUNTING OF MOLLY HARTLEY and DRAGON WARS.
