Hot off its dual success with SINISTER and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4, Blumhouse Productions is tackling an adaptation of the master of literary horror, for Universal to release.

Variety reports that the companies are teaming on MERCY, based on Stephen King’s short story “Gramma” from the SKELETON CREW anthology. A.I.’s Frances O’Connor stars as a singer mother who is joined by her two young sons in taking care of their senile old grandmother—whom they discover is a witch. Peter Cornwell will direct MERCY from a script by Matt Greenberg (who also penned the King-based 1408 and upcoming PET SEMATARY remake); Jason Blum will produce with McG and the latter’s Wonderland Sound and Vision partner Mary Viola. Cornwell previously helmed the hit THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT, which will be followed up soon by THE HAUNTING IN GEORGIA and the in-development THE HAUNTING IN MANHATTAN. “Gramma” was previously adapted for the 1986 revival of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, with a script by Harlan Ellison and CARRIE’s Piper Laurie doing some of the voice of Gramma.
