Reports of Rob Zombie echoing Argento and Jodorowsky have not been greatly exaggerated.
Deadline premiered the highly anticipated first look at Rob Zombie's upcoming THE LORDS OF SALEM, and it looks (as I had hoped) a bit stunning. Evocative, bizzare and steeped in the occult, early word that LORDS is a haunting, dreamy journey seem totally founded here. I guess we'll see what happens once his brand of dialogue comes in.
Interestingly, the images also seem to indicate a serious reverence to cinema in LORDS OF SALEM. The famous moon from Melies' VOYAGE TO THE MOON is briefly caught, as well as a gorgeous shot from within a theater and some incredibly Kubrick-ian visual cues. In the film, "Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie), a radio station DJ, receives a wooden box containing a record, 'a gift from the Lords.' Heidi listens and the bizarre sounds within the grooves immediately trigger flashbacks of Salem's violent past. Is Heidi going mad or are the Lords of Salem returning for revenge on modern day Salem?"
THE LORDS OF SALEM is out in 2013.
