While speaking to writer/director Drew Goddard about this week’s DVD/Blu-ray release THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, (see the interview here) Fango asked for an update on the follow-up to CLOVERFIELD, the 2008 found-footage monster hit he scripted for director Matt Reeves and producer J.J. Abrams.

It was reported a little while back that the trio were working on an untitled CLOVERFIELD sequel, but Goddard tells Fango, “Not actively. It’s certainly something we all want to do, but it’s kind of a question of getting the stars to align between Matt and J.J. and I and finding the right time for the three of us to do it, because I don’t think any of us want to do it without the other two.”

CLOVERFIELD memorably sicced a 40-story monster on New York City, and part of the fun of a second chapter would be seeing what new metropolis would be destroyed. On the subject of both where a movie would take place and what story it might entail, Goddard says, “You know, it’s funny—I think if you asked me, Matt and J.J., all three of us would have distinct answers to that question. That’s what’s fun about that collaboration; the three of us get together and sort of fight it out, and a movie gets made somewhere in the middle.” If any further developments crop up about a new round of monster madness, we’ll be sure to let you know…
