Rebecca Hall stars in the 1919-set tale of a haunted boarding school.
THE AWAKENING sees ghosts/spiritualist debunker Florence Cathcart (Hall) journey to a countryside school in 1919 England to discover the truth behind sightings of a child's ghost. The film is really solid, old fashioned gothic storytelling, with at least two sequences of eerie, unsettling power and gorgeous, somber atmosphere informed by the after-effects of WWI. I do wish filmmakers would stop digitally distorting ghost faces, however.
