Summer may have just started, but it's never too soon to look forward to one of the best genre festivals going.

Austin's Fantastic Fest, co-founded by the Alamo Drafthouse's head of state Tim League, has announced this year's opening film, Tim Burton's FRANKENWEENIE. The picture seems a perfect introduction to the week long blast, which aims to be a celebration of cinema goers' hunger for the best in weird, wonderful, impassioned genre from around the world. From what I've seen of FRANKENWEENIE, it looks to be a return to form for Burton, both incredibly reverential to the monster tales of yore and deeply personal, to his own childhood and expressing yourself through the macabre, fantastic, etc.

League said, "Tim Burton stands as a titan of modern genre cinema. To world premiere the feature adaptation of his early beloved short is a huge honor for me personally and for the festival in general."

Accompanying the announcement is Mike Saputo's totally cosmic poster art for Fantastic Fest 2012, which runs September 20-27. For more info, including how you can attend (and you should, if you can!), head to the official site here
