Refined estimates for this weekend’s box office have come in, and it looks like New Line and Platinum Dunes’ remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET has come in a little short of initial projections. It has still handily claimed the number-one spot on the chart, however.
Various sources are reporting that the Freddy Krueger reboot, first thought to be headed for a $35-million opening frame after taking in $15.8 million from Thursday midnights and Friday, will end up with an estimated $32.2 million for its first three days, well ahead of number-two placer HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON. That’s certainly a healthy opening, though it falls a bit short of last year’s update of FRIDAY THE 13TH from New Line and Dunes, which debuted to a $40.5-million weekend (followed by a calamitous 80-percent drop in its second frame). It also lands behind the $36.4 million that FREDDY VS. JASON, the series’ highest grosser, took in back in August 2003, on its way to $82.6 million. Actual figures will be reported tomorrow.
