Chad Ferrin, director of the disturbo-fests SOMEONE’S
KNOCKING AT THE DOOR and THE GHOULS, is saddling up for a period thriller
called HORSE. He got in touch with details on the project, and an update on his
Western horror feature DANCES WITH WEREWOLVES.
“I’m putting everything I’ve got into HORSE—heart and soul!” Ferrin tells Fango. “It’s basically about a man seeking vengeance upon the men who murdered his horse—not necessarily a horror film, but full tension and horrific moments, with elements of ALIENS, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and THE THING thrown in. It crosses all genres beautifully.”
Ferrin elaborates on the storyline and themes: “In the Old West, a man relies on two things to survive: his gun and his horse. Luther Cobb just lost one of those, his beloved horse Bud. Cobb is a man of true grit, having fought in the Civil War and skirmishes in the American Indian Wars. He has seen plenty of bloodshed and is now on the trail of those responsible for killing his friend. HORSE is a homage to Budd Boetticher, Sam Peckinpah, John Ford, Howard Hawks, Sam Fuller and Sergio Leone. It is vengeance/siege/chase/masculinity/morality packed into one hell of an action-driven Western. And best of all, it’s being produced by the man who gave me my start in the film biz, Michael Leahy [whose credits include FEAST and DRIVE]. And with him behind it, I am 100 percent confident that we’ll make an amazing film that will reach the widest possible audience.”
Ferrin has set up a Kickstarter page to drum up financing, as well as a Facebook page for the project. And what of DANCES WITH WEREWOLVES, the hairier sagebrush saga he’d been set to helm (see previous item here)? “The funding fell through a couple of times,” Ferrin reveals, “but now seems close to being locked down. Fingers crossed. That’s one of the reasons I decided to give Kickstarter a try; it’s been so frustrating waiting for someone with money to pull the trigger that I had to pull it myself.”
