As many speculated from its title, story details now confirm Roth is reigniting the tribal fires lit by Deodato, Lenzi, Martino & co.
A common name for the Amazon jungle, and an alternate title for CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST II, many had picked up the scent that Eli Roth's (HOSTEL, CABIN FEVER) return to directing would delve into the often shocking and brutal mondo/cannibal subgenre popularized by Italian filmmakers of the 70s and 80s.
Variety solidifies such rumors, reporting that Constantin Film have acquired the rights to Roth's upcoming GREEN INFERNO, calling it a "cannibal film", and describing the plot as such: "THE GREEN INFERNO follows an idealistic student and a group of naive do-gooders who are captured by cannibalistic Indios after their plane crash lands in the Peruvian jungle."
Roth is certainly a die hard of films like MAN FROM DEEP RIVER and CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, even casting the latter movie's director, Ruggero Deodato in a playful cameo in HOSTEL PART II. Roth has also certainly pushed boundaries of brutality in popular mainstream genre cinema of the last ten years, so it would seem an old fashioned slice of mondo cinema is on the menu, roasted human flesh style.
