Dreamworks and Working Title are taking Daphne du Maurier's novel for another big screen spin.
Most famously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock, Dreamworks are said to be looking to du Maurier's source material for the re-do of the classic tale, Variety reports. REBECCA follows a young woman and her marriage to the wealthy Maxim de Winter (played by Laurence Olivier in the original film). Upon arrival at his sweeping estate, she comes to find his departed first wife, Rebecca, has an anguished hold on the surroundings.
Steven Knight, of EASTERN PROMISES fame, is penning the screenplay. While Hitchcock's film remained for the most part faithful to the original novel, two major aspects were tweaked. One, in light of the then Hays Code and the other to the master's own preference.
No word on if they plan to maintain a period setting.
