Despite (or maybe a little bit because of) all the publicity about vocal audience negativity toward its ending, Paramount's THE DEVIL INSIDE became a box-office winner this weekend.
Various sources are reporting that the Paramount pickup for its InSurge division (which cost about $1 million) raked in $16.85 million on its opening Friday, including $2 million from midnight shows, and even given that its opening-frame grosses were front-loaded in the manner of many such films, DEVIL pulled in an estimated $34.5 million in its first three days. For comparative purposes, that's significantly higher than other recent possession pictures like THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, THE UNBORN and THE RITE did in their first weekends—and more than the likes of THE RITE, PRIEST, DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, DREAM HOUSE, FRIGHT NIGHT, APOLLO 18 and THE THING did in their entire runs last year. Final grosses will be reported Monday; see our DEVIL INSIDE review here.
