In celebration of Marilyn Manson's 43rd birthday today, Cinema Arts has announced VAMPIRES OF HOLLYWOOD, a new project to star the dark rock icon. According to Cinema Arts, the film tells the story of music industry investigative journalist Paul Shaye (Getty), who goes on the hunt for flamboyant rock star and vampire Darcy Manning (Manson), in effort to avenge the death of a friend murdered by the musician. In his search, Shaye is caught up in a whirlwind of danger, deception, and violence, as Manning unleashes his minions, and his own bloodlust, upon the protagonist. The film is set against the backdrop of the wild world of Hollywood rock and roll.
The film will be directed by Rob Walker, who comments, "The story attracted my attention because of its marvelous central figure, the aged gargoyle of rock, Manning. A kind of crazed Ozzy or a Mick, prancing and gyrating, driven by rock and blood. The vision reaches back to the earliest creations of Fritz Lang, the master of darkness and my favorite director.”
Regarding the casting of Manson in what would be his first leading role, Cinema Arts' Bob Powell relates, "With his look and swagger, he is obviously perfect for the role of our faded, jaded rock star, Darcy Manning." Other announced cast members include Malcolm McDowell, Balthazar (FEAST) Getty, Lochlyn (FREDDY VS. JASON) Munro, Rudolf Martin, and Fianni Capaldi.
Manson has been working on several film projects of his own as of late, including the stalled PHANTASMAGORIA: THE VISIONS OF LEWIS CARROLL, which has yet to pass initial trailer stage, which you can see here. Last year Manson teamed up with Shia (TRANSFORMERS) LaBeouf to create the graphic short film BORN VILLAIN (also the name of his upcoming 2012 album), which can be seen on Manson's site. His last album HIGH END OF LOW was steeped in cinema references, so it is clear that Mr. Manson has celluloid on his mind.
