Screen Gems is looking to take a UCLA grad student's techno-horror short all the way to cinemas.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Tim Shechmesiter's eleven minute thesis film, VIRAL, has caught the eye of Screen Gems and he'll now direct and co-write a feature based on it with his brother Matt. No specific story is given for the short, but it's apparently a tale of cyberbullying that takes on supernatural overtones.
THE GRUDGE writer Stephen Susco discovered the short and is producing alongside the Screen Gems. Of the film, he said, “It strikes at the modern social media anxiety that really hits a hot nerve in this country. How young people communicate is changing and technology is altering the tenor of that communication—in many cases for the worse. And this is an opportunity to do something scary and really potent at the same time.”
