Chilean filmmaker Francesc Morales (the man responsible for 2010's actors in animal suits tale HUMANIMAL) is once again getting transgressive with his next endeavor, a horror story about abortion.
Screen Daily reports that Morales is currently helming APIO VERDE, a film about a young girl pregnant with a child afflicted by a terminal disease. The director explains that that VERDE "starts as a social drama and ends as a horror film" and apparently examines the complications of Chile being a country in which therapeutic abortion is illegal. Morales told the publication, "This is very real situation that has happened many times on our country. Since 1989, a few months before the end of the Chilean dictatorship, it was stated that therapeutic abortion would be considered illegal, not even when the life of the mother is in danger. The realism is very important on this film which is why the story is based on lives of many real people and it also shows how politics and religion get involved on a subject like this. Yet the movie is not a drama, but a thriller that states how this is not only an attempt to the human rights but also a situation that always leads to a violent resolution."
Abortion being an undoubtedly touchy subject and personal feelings aside, this is great. Horror is often at its best when it's provoking, and with a director who's already proved he's willing to push, this could be one to watch.
