The quest to uncover just what PROMETHEUS is really about continues!
Discussing the ALIEN prequel with Wall Street Journal blog Speakeasy, the BLADE RUNNER director referenced the classic myth the film gets its title from, saying the film is about a "'higher being' who challenges the gods, and the gods don’t want to give him fire. Fire is our first form of technology, and so by taking fire, the higher being is punished in perpetuity in a horrible fashion."
Prometheus, of course, took fire from the gods (namely Zeus) and brought it to mankind. Zeus punished Prometheus by binding him to a boulder where an eagle would endlessly eat his liver.
That was all, as far as story goes, although he went on to say the last eight minutes of the PROMETHEUS story evolve into "a pretty good DNA of the ALIEN one." While I'm awful at speculating, maybe the film takes its cue from tales of alien technology aiding our own.
Scott also confirmed (although it didn't seem like it really needed to be asked) that Sigourney Weaver would not be popping up in any form in the film. PROMETHEUS hits June 8, 2012. It stars Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Charlize Theron and Noomi Rapace.
